Reef Savvy/St Judes 100 Gallon Dream Tank Giveaway

Congratulations on winning the ReefSavvy tank, and goodies. IMHO they are one of the best builders out their now, and I would love to have one of their tanks.

Thank you very much! Reef Savvy sure does build a beautiful tank.

I woke up this morning and the tank has cleared up significantly. I am already starting to see brown diatoms on the glass as well.

This past Friday I received my 3rd and final 1 year supply of food. Needless to say, my freezer is jammed full of reef food. I am very thankful my wife hasn't complained about the lack of freezer space

This food is from Rogger's Reef, and I have heard some very good things about his product. From what I understand he doesn't add any water to the food which makes it very thick and it stays intact and does not break apart easily. He explained to me that this is actually beneficial as the fish eat every part of the food and you don't have a ton of waste blowing all over the water column. He even threw in one of his feeding clips for me to try out.

I also added 2 chromis this weekend, I have a 3rd to be transferred over from my 30 gallon. The tank is finally alive!

I actually made some progress this weekend and got my plumbing all sorted out. I installed a fan on the back wall and mounted my vertex libra doser. I think I am going to mount my apex system on the back wall up high just left of the exhaust fan. I plan on mounting my 4 ecotech pump drivers on the left wall. I am hoping to start filling the tank with water by next weekend.

Where does your ATO line feed the tank? I assume into the DT?

Nope, right there next to my return pump. If you are thinking about back siphoning, I took care of that with a tee and a valve on the ATO pump discharge line... works like a charm. I'll take a pic and post it later this evening.

Good looking system...as far as the noise from your return, that is a lot of pump for a return on that size tank but hard plumbing always amplifies noise, try running spa-flex or vinyl tubing, it should significantly reduce the noise.

Thanks... yeah I have the barb fittings to add a small section of flex hose - just haven't installed it yet. However, once everything settled in, the noise seemed to get somewhat better. It could still be a little quieter though.

Looking good! That's a heckuva prize to win!
Thanks Matt, it sure was! I am still in shock that I won! I am very fortunate, that's for sure.

Can you point out what you are referring to? I was thinking about syphon. Thx

Here is a better picture showing the tee and valve, creating an air break to stop the back siphoning. Works very good. When the pump kicks on and flows fresh water into my sump, a small amount of water trickles out of that tee section and back into my ATO reservoir. When the pump stops, air enters the line and stops the siphon almost instantly.

Thanks! So when the pump turns on to fill the sump does any of the water flow out through the tee back into the ATO container?

How's the marco? debating between reef saver, pukani or marco for my next build. Love the tankyou lucky duck. Do you have any idea for stocking just yet? (fish wise)

So far I'm liking the marco rocks, no complaints here. I never had a PO4 spike like some have reported. As far as fish stocking list I am thinking of the following:

3 chromis
2 designer clowns (I won $300 worth of designer clown fish at Alpha Aquaculture)
3 Lyretail anthias
1-2 Dispar anthias
1 yellow tang
1 tomini tang
wrasse (maybe a mystery)

I have a 6 line in my 30 gallon right now and have had him for 3 yrs or so. He will be going back to the LFS as I do not want to transfer him over to the new tank. He was such a bully, and picked on a majority of my fish. Maybe he would do better in a larger tank, but I don't want to take that risk. So back to the LFS he will go.

Time for an update:

So for the past two weeks I've have been plagued with cloudy water and I just assumed it was a bacterial bloom. Over the past few days it was getting worse and worse. I checked NO3 and PO4 and both were undetectable. So finally last night I decided to check my Alk and sure enough it was 5 dkh! I raised it up to 8 dkh and wouldn't you know it the water clears up. I didn't even think to check for something so simple like my Alk, I just assumed it had to be pretty good seeing as how my tank is so new and I don't have anything consuming Alk or CA at the moment. I made all of my saltwater with the free Aqua Medic salt that I had won. I need to make a fresh batch and test it to see what the levels are. Not impressed with that salt, that's for sure.

Last week I installed my Ecotech Radion XR15FW over my sump using the Ecotech cable hanging system. I really like the way it turned out and the ease of adjustment on the cable stays. This light is really bright and has a ton of adjustability. I am betting this thing will grow some coral even though its the fresh water version. Don't mind the mess of cables, those will be tidied up eventually.

I want to take a minute and give a shout out to Benner's Woodworking for such an awesome cabinet that this tank is sitting on. It is very well built and truly made from a craftsman. I love the openness it has when both doors are open to give me a ton of free working clearance. Chris is a super nice guy and a pleasure to deal with. I would highly recommend them for anyone thinking of getting a new stand built.

I also purchased a 4x8 piece of marine pure block and added it to my sump for added bacterial growth. I am sure it will take a few months to start working, but I want to be ready when I start adding fish more aggressively.

And to wrap things up here, I wanted to post a few pics I took today of my old 30 gallon reef tank. These will be the last photos I take of the tank in its current condition as I will be slowly transferring over the live stock to the new tank in the next couple of weeks. The tank is roughly 3 years old and all of the corals started from small frags. I kind of let this tank go in the past 8 months as I wasn't as a focused on it as I should have been, but it was a fun tank and is completely out of room ;) The first pic was taken in 2013 for a comparison.

Wow!!! That tank is stuffed to the rim with coral!!!! Very cool when growth is allowed to take its own course:)

Lol thanks Matt. Yeah, I'm not going to have so many birdsnest corals in the new tank. They grow way too fast and can get out of control!

They do grow fast, which is cool to me. The thing that is a bummer about them to me is that they catch all kinds of stuff down in the branches and kind of spoil from the inside.
