It's been a couple months, and I'm overdue for an update. Things went downhill a few weeks after adding the Marco rocks. The water became very cloudy and stayed cloudy for over a month. A nasty snotty slime built up all over the rocks and sump and clogged my skimmer rendering it useless. I tried water changes and liquid bacterial products but to no avail. I presume it was just a nasty bacterial bloom that wouldn't go away. Needless to say, I finally threw in the towel, pulled out the Marco and ordered up 50 lbs of Tampa Bay Live Rock. I didn't want to wait several more months (possibly longer) for things to clear up and mature on the Marco. I'll take the risk of getting some hitchhikers for some nice fully cured rock!
The stuff I purchased was V2.1 Walt Smith rock. The shipment arrived yesterday and I am very pleased with the end result! Tons of life and the shapes are really nice. Richard at TBS was great to work with and very knowledgeable. He has a 5 acre plot out in the Gulf of Mexico in which the rock is cured for nearly 2 years. The Rock is shipped submerged in water, so there is very little die-off, if any. Now on to the pics.... keep in mind I just threw the rocks in last night and still need to re-arrange the aquascape.
Here was a pic of the nasty slime that would build up in my sump daily!
So weird, I use Marco rocks exclusively and recommend it to everybody. I have never heard of this problem before. I never even cured mine just straight into a new reef and no problems. I wonder if something happened when he was cooking it for a while before putting it in ie. leaching from plastic tubs or something.
Things are going good.... Slow but good. Currently have 12 fish, I'll try and get on here soon and do a bigger update. But in the meantime, a quick pic from the other day.
