Reeferhead's 150DD Build

I don't know if anyone else has tried this (and it probably won't work with your Magnum pump since the flow is always on), but I've had a reasonable degree of success with this manual siphon method:
1) Plunge the vacuum into the sand bed. You'll get a big plug of sand/detritus to start rising up the vacuum.
2) Pull the vacuum up just above the sand bed and immediately kink the hose to stop/slow the flow way down.
3) The heavier sand falls back down into the sand bed while the detritus will remain mostly suspended in the big tube.
4) Unkink the hose and VOILA! Detritus gets sucked out, sand stays in sand bed (for the most part).
5) Repeat until a) you're out of patience, b) you're out of detritus, or c) you're out of water. ;)

I've read some suggest to only do one part of your sand bed at a time with this method so you don't devastate your whole bacterial population in one shot, but you do pull out a lot of junk and probably more so than just skimming the top of the sand bed. Anyway, just a vacuuming tip on RC that I've found to be helpful...

I have a ball valve on the inlet hose. I've been playing around with basically doing same thing you describe by controlling it in one hand while vacuuming with the other. The nice thing about the Magnum is that I never run out of water. My water changes are done automatically anyway so it's nice not to have to deal with any buckets to do this. ;)
I plan on cleaning half the tank every week but I'm not really concerned about the bacteria. The sand is purely cosmetic. This isn't a DSB so there is no anoxic zone to disturb. I have plenty of live rock and DSBs in the sump so I'm not concerned about any meaningful change in my bacteria population. You would need a really strong vacuum to rip a significant amount of bacteria out anyway.

I love a clean tank. As I'm planning out the new tank it looks like I'm going to go with a closed loop instead of vortechs to eliminate any foreign objects in the tank. I can't stand the sight of pipes and pumps.

BK

I think you should build a false wall or external Waveboxes and/or Tunze compartments.

Thanks for the video and the tips, I'll give it another try this weekend. btw Reeferhead the tanks looking great.

Thanks everybody for your comments.

I bought this before our last SCUBA trip but haven't bothered to try it on the tank until tonight. I am not good at photography and white balance and macro shots are the bane of my existence  but this housing helped me take some really good and color accurate shots. I hate F'n around with things like cameras but this was really easy. Its amazing how much easier its is to take decent shots of a tank when you have the freedom to put the camera in the water! No clipping or photoshop, from tank to RC in less than 20 minutes!

I love my little underwater camera, but the pics aren't as good and crisp like that one. I love the macro of your ATL

Your coral growth is good. I like the minimalist rock design. It actually makes the tank look bigger than a 150. I'm glad that your sps are bouncing back from the problems you had previously. Well done

That lokani blew up!!! I've had 30,000 leagues for over two years and has not grown AT ALL. Not even any encrusting. Just sits there on a frag with pretty colors.

Yeah man its doing good, got it from Kirk. I have it high up under about 600 PAR

Nice shots Nick, tank is looking great!

That lokani loves light.. I keep a piece on the frag rack about 3" higher than the mother colony and it grows 1.5X faster.

so when we get the new saw, how long before you cut up the scoly?:lol2:

I don't buy wild corals unless I plan to frag them so... not long I think. The scoly is really healthy and feeding well. I just have to prepare myself for how long it will take for the coral to resemble itself again, a year plus. :eek2:

Finally caught him!

My Desjardini Sailfin is in the QT tank waiting to go to Velko's big 600 when he's open tomorrow. I've had this fish since it was less than an inch long, bought it out of a nanocube at Seascape about three years ago, man they grow fast. Beth's upset as its her favorite fish... but its time, I never meant to keep it this long.

Now if I can just catch that Falco. :D

I caught the Falco Hawk. He would not fall for the fish trap so I had to break out my trusty sheet of acrylic and corner him. This is another big plus for my open aquascape, it makes it that much easier to catch fish when I need to. I think I saw my new Bartlett's Anthias wink at me when I did it. That damn hawk has had him cornered in a live rock hole for four days  "Freckles" the sailfin tang (Beth's name, I don't name fish) is in Velko's big tank and will probably be a foot long in a year. Check him out the next time your at Aquatic Treasures. :D

BTW, I'm aware fish don't have eyelids  Well most fish anyway
