The Apex app for the Tablet is the same one available for the phone. (There's an iphone version as well I believe).
Without ethernet at the fish tank, you could get a real cheapo wireless bridge. They sell on amazon for as low as $10.
Would I like the Apex without the App. I certainly wouldn't like it as much, since I would only be able to remotely tap into the controller with a lap top. That being said, I would still go for the Apex over the RK if this were the case. The Reef Angel Controller would be quite a bit closer in terms of how I rank the products though if no Iphone/Android App existed.
I really like not having to touch the controller itself to trigger a feed mode, keep the lights on, turn them off early (fish acclimating), bring up graphs, etc. There's been multiple times I've had parties or late gatherings at the house where I wanted to keep the lights on later while people were at the house. I took care of it right from my phone while people were at the house, instead of having to fumble around with the fish tank while company was already present.
The Vortech control, Net Connectivity in the base unit, and Customer Service was the major reasons I personally went with the Apex. I travel a lot for business, so having the ability to tap into, and program/control, the tank from virtually any internet accessible device was huge.
