Reefkeeping in America's Heartland - Ozarksreef Journal

Oh, I'm not anywhere Springfield anymore. I moved to southwest Florida about four years ago. Finally took the plunge and setup another glass box. I get to cherry pick worldwide corals in Orlando!

Any more photos?

Can you please explain the colour of the Hawkins Echinata to me? Is this a blue or green coral? Or Teal coloured?

Your frag looks green; whereas I have seen it photographed and it looks blue:

Ozark, that is a beautiful tank. I live just to the north of you in Clinton, and would love to come see your tank some time. I am in the process of setting up a 210 right now. What are you using in the balling method?

Hey Sahin - need to get an update out soon. I've been working on a big project lately and just haven't had time to get more photos posted. Soon I hope! I would describe the Hawkins is more teal than pure green. Definitely some bluish highlights.

Thanks - I appreciate it. You're certainly welcome to stop by if you ever come down to Springfield. I still don't feel like it's worth a trip from Clinton, but maybe one day! I'm using BRS for ALK, CA, and MAG via a Litermeter 3.

Thanks, we come down that way a few times a year to eat at Nakatos, so maybe we could drop by. I've been going back and forth with either a calcium reactor or the supplements. What made you choose supplementation?

Bump for update.

Last September, I moved the tank to a new location. It has taken some time to bring things around, but most of the corals are looking good again. I also added some colonies that I picked up from some hobbyists in the area. Finally, I made a significant change in lighting - moving to an all-LED system since September. Here's some photos I took over the weekend!

Wow. Corals look great. Is that a Sunset millepora? That's my favourite of the bunch.

Thanks Sahin - that coral didn't respond well to the move at all. Polyps retracted and color flattened out. After around two months though, it started to come back and is growing quickly now. Not sure if it is a sunset, but I do like the colors. I've got another colony that shows more of the pink and orange highlights.

And then there's this interesting coral - 20,000 Leagues Lokani...

I'm glad someone still has the 20K Lokani! That appears to be a difficult coral to source these days since many colonies have died off. Finding it online at various E-tailers is next to impossible.

Why do you think yours has grown into a "nest of snakes" shape?

All in all, beautiful pictures, could we see a FTS?

I acquired this colony from a hobbyist getting out. I'm not sure what prompted this interesting growth form, but I really like it! Different than anything else in the tank. I've got a few more coral shots coming and will work on getting a FTS up soon.

This is the DFS Rusty Pink Millepora. It started out really slowly and has taken off with very high light and flow.

The sunset monti has really started to grow well - hoping it makes its way to the front of the reef structure soon.

A wild colony that nearly faded to nothing has made a strong comeback.

The Azul stag and seasons greetings monti present a nice contrast. Pay no attention to the poor purple stylo I hacked up in the background ;-)

This tabling coral displays a strong feeding response when I drop mysis and brine in the tank.

Tyree flower petal monti is coming on strong.

Fantastic, very happy to see an update and here things are improving after the move. Everything looks great.

Thanks - it's always scary moving an established reef. It's interesting to see the initial setback that corals take and then the signs of coming back around. There's still a few colonies that haven't come back completely, but most are really looking good; even better than before the move.

5,6,&7 nice tabling form, would you know what species?

I'm not sure what species this is. I agree though - the multi-level tabling growth form is what makes this coral so appealing!
