I have a Reeflo Dart Hybrid that has been up and running for about a year. How long do these pumps usually last and should I have a backup just in case this pump should fail? In general, how long do external pumps usually last?
The pumps will last years. The only issue with the Reefflo pumps is their seals. That said, I have always kept spare pumps regardless of the brand. I've been doing that for more than 10 years. My thinking is that if a pump goes out it could cost me my tank. A spare pump is piece of mind in my opinion and well worth the cost should you ever need it.
I switched from standard Reeflo dart and baracuda to their Gold Series pumps and am really glad I did. They are even quieter and run cooler. I now have my standard Reefflo's as my spares. I also keep spare seals on hand but have yet to need them with the gold series pumps.
