there is a drain in the cup, yes ... so it would always drain into another container. I have it hooked to a 5gallon bucket/jug.
The skimmer comes with a cap for the drain, so you don't have to use the drain if you don't want.

I thought i was doing well too ... till i hooked this beast up ... then my brown blue tipped stag turned all baby blue w/ teal ... and other corals colored up nicely as well ... BUT i do have a high bio-load.

Up until today, I was sold on an MRC MR-3R, which would have come in at the $800 range. I've rea about pump size, heat etc. and just feel that Becketts is "old technology".
Jeremy - two questions:
1) If I pump from my sump straight up to a 40" height, then discharge straight down ( assuming I size the feed pump correctly) will I have a problem? As posted by JenDub
2) If I discharge to a sump that has varying water levels - will that cause problems?
Somehow I need to logically justify $500 (to my wife), and Wiz - better looking corals is a big start. I want more bio-load, fish etc., but have never felt totally comfy with the G3.

I run my reeflo 250 at about 40" off the ground, above the sumps. I pump up out of the sump, and drain right back down. When the power goes off, the unit does back siphon. However, I can't figure for the life of me what the actual problem with this is, as I don't see it to be an issue at all for me? The skimmer only drains down to the black box though, so when the pumps would kick back on the recirc sequence pump will not run dry at all.
Discharging to a sump with varying water levels will not be an issue at all. The water level of any sump you are feeding from or to, does not make a difference in the level of the skimmer since it's a recirc.

I am very interested in a top skimmer.Would this be overkill for a 90 gallon reef ready with a 75 gallon sump.

personally, i think yes, it would be overkill. I personally would wait till the smaller model will be released, or if you don't have the time to wait, look into other alternatives, such as the mubble masters, small bubblekings, euroreef, deltecs etc..etc... there are plenty out there to choose from, but IMHO i think this skimmer would be overkill for that size tank.

Do you know about how long it will be till they release the smaller model Approx.
If you have a 16" x 21" area you would be just fine, with a little room to play.
We hope to have the smaller version ready in about 4-6 weeks at the latest.
We will also have the prototype of the larger version at MACNA. This is one huge skimmer, that is ran off of a Hammerhead needlewheel pump.
Just go with ther larger version and have room to upgrade if you so desire in the future. I personally wouldn't put the 250 on anything smaller than 180-200 gallons. Anything over that and I think you would be fine, all the way up to 1000 - 1200 gallons depending on stock load.
