Reeflo/Sequence Skimmer Club

I ran mine underwater for the first week or so that I got it and it ran ok as well. I raised it above the water level because others on this board suggested it. I dont know why my feed water level wont stay constant. I raise it to just below the flange (without the reeflo on) and it slowly starts dropping. I turned the reeflo on this morning and set the height with both running to try and get a head developed. If its overflowing again when I get home tonight then I am going to do a gate valve mod on it.
 
I would like to rule out the pump. If there is something wrong with the pump it should read higher than normal watts. I have not seen it on the Darts but on sedras they would spike at high watts and would have sparatic air pull, usually due to calcium build up on the shaft.
 
I pulled the mag 7 I had on it last night and ran it in a bucket and thought I had found the problem. The impellar shaft (which appears ceramic) broke. I fashioned a new shaft out of carbon fiber rod and turned it back on. (Same problem) I then ran to good old home depot last night and found a open box Becket pond pump (600gph) and got it for 40 bucks. I plugged that in and it seemed to be holding the water at the right level so I went ahead and turned the reeflo on. The level was where I needed it and I wet to bed hoping to see a fat juicy head in the morning. (that doesn't sound right) I got up about 5 this morning and checked it and my 5 gallon overflow was full. I dialed the air down just a **** hair on the reeflo so the bubbles were popping about 3 inches below collection cup rim and left for work.

Hopefully it will be foaming properly when I get home.

does the pond pump have any copper in it?
 
I would hope not.:) It is a magnetic driven pump so I dont know why they would have copper in it. Its a Becket 600.
 
Ohhh. I didnt know that. I will pull the impellar apart tonight and see if there is any of that present. Thanks
 
The pump has no copper. Great:D

Also, the skimmer has stablized and is working well now. I attached soome pics. I think I may be running it a little wet right now as I dont have a nice foamy head yet. What do you guys think?

What is the advantage of pushing water feed into the pump/ pinwheel as oppose to feeding water directly into the reaction chamber ?

Looks good Ed, if you just got it I would open that valve up all the way. It will take 7-10 days to break in and when it does it will overflow. I ran mine wide open for a week when I set it up.

I have been pondering the same question. My thinking is that by having the feed before the pump will allow less turbulance in the chamber compaired to feeding the water directly. I would create a new thread and see if anyone has a more scientific explenation.
 
Upgrading Collection Cup

Upgrading Collection Cup

In regards to the upgraded neck/collection cup, wouldn't it be a heck of a lot cheaper to just have a neck extension made (7" or whatever the difference is) to just go between the skimmer body and the exsisting cup? $250 is a good chunk of change on top of the skimmer price. Just looking for a cheaper alternative to increase performance.

Also, no more actually reading of what the air draw is on the 250?

I bet MRC could make this, but they would need to know exactly where to put the screw holes or it wouldn't match up.

Another alternative would be to see if Coralvue would have them made.

I'm sure there are others that could make them as well.
