The upgraded cup is much more than a longer neck. The cup itself is much larger itself. The way it was designed is to allow the skimmate to form a natural head and colapse over, instead of pounding the head into the lid prematurly popping the bubbles and effecting performance and deposits collecting in the neck. Overall the cup itself is worth its price in acrylic and adds value to the overal skimmer, it really puts the reeflo stock cup to shame.

Isn't the cup made for the baldor motor upgrade though?

Nope. Is was created before they decided to place the baldor pumps on the skimmer to allow the skimmer to work at full efficiency. Sure, now that the higher pressure/power baldor motor is now available it would indead handle better and offer more control with the use of the upgraded cup.

What would one expect to happen if just an extension riser was put in place with the original cup? Would hate to spend $250 more on top of the skimmer price.

Also, for those feeding there skimmer from an overflow, do you just run the drain right into the skimmer? Does the air coming down the line cause any problems feeding the skimmer this way?

You would not gain the extra control you would expect on a longer neck. You sould end up with performance close to a low grade becket. In order for you to onany luck with just an extension you will need to nock the crown off epoxy the holes, cut down the top of the neck by1-2 inches. Ultimately you creating a smaller cheaper version of the upgraded cup.

I had trouble with the air coming into the skimmer gravity feeding this way and gave it up. It was putting big bubbles into the reaction chamber that were breaking up the foam. Others have made it work however. If you try it, I would suggest using an overflow dedicated JUSt to feeding your skimmer. Those who were more successful than we with the gravity feed seem to have it set up this way from what I have read.

Regarding the upgraded cup, it also handles the foam head differently than the standard cup. It is open rather than having a "lid" at the top of the riser tube.

Also, the covering on the cup is also MUCH heavier with no holes in it. This was important for me. During the curing process, when I put live rock in the tank, the foam head would, literally, blow the lid right off the skimmer with the standard cup. The foam was also pouring out of the ventillation holes on the standard cup. Even with the outflow opened all the way.

The upgraded cup handles these episodes much better since it only vents out the bottom drain and the lid stays put. Also, with the higher riser, I can actually manage the extreme foam production that is going on with curing rock in my system.

What size tank are you running this on? You really have no need for the upgraded cup if it is on a 140. As far as the price goes on top of the skimmer, the price gives the most performance for the price of anytihng available and another $250 to increase it that much is well worth it.

It will be going on a heavily stocked 220 gal. system, but we will be upgrading in a year or so to a roughly 400-450 gal. system which is the reason i'm buying this skimmer. My current Octopus NW200 ain't cuttin it. :lol:

I don't have the skimmer yet, but should have it in a couple of weeks.
