Looking good speedstar!

The best way to clean mine so far was to turn off the feed pump and keep the orca running. This is good enough for now. There is no good way to get inside the bubble plate compartment unfortunately, but that should not really be necessary for a long time I hope. With all the turbulence in that compartment there should not be much build up to clean.

Very happy with mine on my 600 gallon system.

I heard that everything is cast acrylic so it should have no effect. The air tubing itself will have to be changed because its plain silicone. You would also have to pass the water and air outputs over some carbon. With the amount of air that is driven through this skimmer, I would think it would make a good reactor.

JenDub,

Can you post pipe measurements and pics of your gate Valve Mod?

Thanks,

Dan
I will post pics when I get home, I used a 1.5" gate valve from mcmaster.com (they have the grey ones for about 20 bucks) and ordered grey sch 40 from us plastics, I turned down a metric pipe on a lathe to us size then used 1.5" from the valve up.

Do you know what the metric pipe size is? There are several places you can buy Sch 40 gray metric gate valves in the US

Thanks.

50mm

I used a 50 x 1 1/2 coupling to connect the metric pipe to the 1 1/2" standard gate valve.

where did you purchase the coupling?

I went to my local RyanHerco location to buy the coupling and gate valve. They were out of the coupling, but I was lucky enough to find it at a LFS after leaving Herco.

Ryan Herco Coupling - part number is 3231.015

I certainly didnt' find the best deal on the gate valve, but, what's done is done, and I was able to find the parts locally. I'm happy with it, so that's all that really matters, right?

Tagging along.

Just ordered my Orca 250 Friday. Should have it Tuesday, can't wait.

My system is 600 gallon display, 150 gallon sump, 120 gallon refugium. I plan on trying to gravity feed the skimmer directly from one of my overflow pipes....

YGPM =)

I like the coupling idea, of course if you glue the tooled down pipe directly into the union on top of the box you can go directly to 1.5" pvc

Is it worth my time to plumb from the overflow instead of using a mag 5? I am happy with the mag but I have 2 overflows and figured I could use 1 and eliminate a pump.

I got my skimmer and stand togther last night. Ready to be plumbed but I have to reduce my overflow drain from 2" down to the intake size on the skimmer.
