Reeflo snapper/dart hybrid help...

Working on a new 150 gallon and just got this pump and it looks WAY too big for a 150. The inlet on this thing is 2 inches!
Did I get the wrong pump?

I'm not a huge "powerhead in the tank fan" so I got one for a closed loop on my 120. I'll be drilling 2. 1.5" drains in the tank and 4, .75 Inputs to the tank.

If you where thinking of using it for your sump... Ya, that's a LOT of pump for a 150

I'm looking at this pump for my 72gal + ~10gal CPR sump. Still too much pump? I was planning on having to throttle it back with a ball valve.

The large inlet/outlet size can be reduced with adapters right?

So I did some calcs on what fittings would be needed to go from the 2"FPT/1.5"FPT fitting on the Dart down to 3/4" (assuming you want the loop plumbed with 3/4"pvc).

Basically 2 fittings each: Inlet: 2"FPT + 2"MPTx2"slip + 2"slipx3/4"slip. Outlet: 1.5"FPT + 1.5"MPTx1.5"slip + 1.5"slip x 3/4"slip.

I'm still not convinced this is the way to go. Buying a pump with 1"MPT in/out would sure be simple... lol Then all ya need is a 3/4"FPTx3/4 slip fitting and then plumb-away with 3/4" pvc.

I'm using it on my 150 with no problems. I do have it throttled back but the pump is without a doubt the best one I have ever owned.

I've got some questions for you!!
What size bulkhead did you use on the sump? and what size PVC did you use from the BH to the motor?
What size flexable PVC/and regular PVC did you use up to the tank etc.? Does Home Deopt have all this stuff or should I order from somewhere online?

thanks!!
Paul.

usually not recommended to reduce the inlet to a pump (and 2" is easy enough to work with)

So many ways to plumb a cat

Hmm. Good point. Thanks. Since posting that I've been reading as many posts as I can on closed loop plumbing. I won't do any reducing until I get up close to the returns going in the tank.

I've got a dart on my 180. Per the manufacturer's instructions it's ok to throttle that baby back to something like 450 gph (which is why I bought my second one). Just adjust the valve on the output side not the input side (don't starve the pump). I've had a dart running on a closed loop for years. splits to two one inch returns. I've just re-plumbed and ordered a second dart to add a second tank to my system. I drilled new returns for the closed loop (now have 4 one inch returns). I like the darts - low power consumption and quiet. I think your fine with keeping it.

for what its worth, a friend spoke with reeflo recently when we were adding two of these to his tank and they said it is perfectly ok to reduce the inlet to 1.5" if you need to.

The sump bulkhead is 1 1/2" which I got online. I got all PVC adapters at Lowes but HD should have the same. I used an adapter at the BH that had the proper size thread for the bulkhead and used 2" PVC. I used 1 1/2" spa flex (from Lowes too!) up to the QD then 1 1/2" pvc split with a T into 1" pvc into the tank BH's. You can see more pics on my homepage and I sent you a PM too. Thanks,

Jay
