Reefsavvy's Ghost Overflow: Patent Pending?

My 16" ghost with teeth works very well. I can push 1500gph+ through it easily.

There was a guy on eBay building knockoffs for a while. Not sure if he still is.

i think that guy stopped making them.. i heard really bad things about the product he was producing (it was bowing and breaking)

I have a custom 12" one from modular marine on my nano, it works perfectly and it's dead silent. I could be running so much more flow through it if I wanted to as well.

what didyou tell them you wanted? How did you propose the idea of making a knock off of the ghost overflow? I just want to be able to contact them and get close to the same thing

Nope, they call it their low profile overflow. It should just be on their ebay page and I sent them a message for the custom size.

that could be why i cannot find anything on this modular marine place.. i wasnt looking on ebay.. by any chance do you have a link? :artist:

For those of you that have either the modular marine model or the reef savvy model...

Is the bulkhead trapped in the wet side box? From the pics I've seen it doesn't look like there is room to get the BH out.

Thank. I'm contemplating a DIY version without teeth. Toothless? :)

I have a MM and its trapped. I don't have the MM running yet or installed, but the visual appearance indicates a well made product. I also ordered custom dimensions and internal lid, all is per spec and the lid fits well even though its not magnetic.

Thanks to you both, flamron and Ben_1313.

It is trapped, but without a gasket. You use two gaskets. It should go, inside box with trapped bulkhead, gasket, glass, gasket, outer box, bulkhead nut. The reason you don't put one on the flange is because it doesn't matter if water gets behind it and on the bulkhead threads. The only place the water could seep out is through the nut that is underwater in the outside box. As long as there is a gasket on both sides of the glass, then you are golden and it wont leak.

Plus, adding a washer inside the box would mean you couldn't replace it later if it gets messed up and it will make the flange thicker, so you have less clearance.

We will be re-releasing this overflow very soon. It will be called the "Synergy Reef Overflow" It will only be available in a 16" version for now. Keep an eye out for it!
And it will be available directly from us. And retailers soon after.

hahaha

Trick me once shame on you, trick me twice, shame on me!

I can't speak for him, but it sounds like he was waiting for Felix to give up and give him the go ahead to start making them and selling them himself. Synergy was contracted to build them for Reef Savvy, so Savvy was the one holding up production I'm sure.

So Reefsavvy just "released" their Ghost overflow.
I run Beans overflow in all my tanks, and couldn't help but notice:
*The surface skimming of the Coast to coast weir is missing from the Ghost.
* The Ghost employs a short box with an inordinately deep notch( an attempt at a weir?) that is essentially rendered obsolete by the addition of the slotted teeth covering that is a critical part of the Ghost overflow
*The deep notch lowers the water in the display significantly
*Display water travels through bulkheads instead of just flowing over the weir, eliminating your would-be surface skimming.
*The airline to trigger the open channel into a full siphon is missing?
*And lastly: the Ghost overflow is "patent pending"? I'm loosely familiar with the patent process, as I just filled a PPA of my own, and I'm just curious: How is your Non Provisional patent going to be granted/ hold water on a standpipe design that someone else ( Bean) came up with years ago, and a grossly superior design at that? What is being patented? The removable teeth box? Because if said patent attempt involves any of the standpipe design, If Im not mistaken, even if Bean didn't lock down the utility patent it's still considered prior art.

I should note that I'm not trying to flame RS, I simply couldn't resist at pointing out some of the design flaws in their, to quote Aquanerd's blog " GameChanging New Overflow."

Comments welcome
