Reeftanks6 90g reef build thread ( pic intense)

Update i will post some pics in a little and i am going to take some of the rock from my old tank and put them in the 90. These rocks will be probably the biggest ones but i will only put 2 or 3 in there for now

Scrub them in old tank water first, rinse them well.

Fortunately for you, your tank has no lighting so the cyano that sneaks in should die off.

The longer the rock is out of the water, the more die-off that will occur. Try to scrub them off while being submerged.

Once you are done, assuming you used 10g of tank water for the scrub and rinse buckets, pour 10g of new saltwater into your old tank as a water change.

FALSE ADVERTISING! it says in the title that this thread is "( pic intense)" i want to see the rocks, before, and after the scrub! if i dont, im going to the BBB!

Ok sorry chrismunn did not take the pictures before the rock was scrubbed. But there was not much algae on the ones i took from the bottom. Everything is running great i think i am making some good progress. Even no there are no fish in the tank and just a little rock. JC scared me for a little there LOL.
But here is the Sump and the 90 with 4 rocks in it.

Also guys what do you guys keep your temperature around. And my biggest rock that i have has some sort of sponge on it. Its very weird looking but cool looking at the same time.

YOU PUT THE SAND IN WITHOUT A LIGHT!!! Now it's ruined!!!!

Just kidding. Looking great.
  haha.
no worries rt6, your doing just fine. how well did you scrape the rocks tho? did you get all the old algae off?
when can we expect lights and pumps? or the rest of the rocks? is your skimmer running?

You need to raise the water level in your refugium another 1.5" higher, and that will mean you need to add more water to the sump to make up for that.

To raise it up, loosen the screw to the inner box of that overflow and lift it up higher, then retighten. The way it is set up right now, it is very close to losing the siphon because the U tube isn't submerged deeply enough.

Looks good so far. I like my tank to run 79F to 80F.

Thanks for the replys guys. As for the rock i did manage to get all of the bad algae off. I think i will be ordering the lights in a week or two. I will start adding the rocks when i figure out when i will get the rest of rocks in. My skimmer is running great and is pulling stuff out already. Since i added the sand the water was still a little cloudy after a day turned everything back on and the water really cleared up. Melev yes i no i need to do that still. I will definitely try that Melev and once again thanks for all the replys guys really helping me out.

When do you guys think i can add a cleaning crew. I have some idea on what i want.
Sand sifting stars
other star fish
snails
maybe crabs heard they shouldnt be in a reef
maybe some shrimp.
Tell me what you think i should add and not to add.

No sand sifting starfish - not a good candidate for a reef tank.
Serpent starfish are fine
Fighting conch is a nice one (one per 2' x 2' worth of sand)
Astreas, Ceriths, Nerites - all good snails
Nassarius are good at cleaning and turning the sand over.
Peppermint shrimp are nice, but can pester some corals (yellow polyps, for example).

ok so i think i go with some of the serpent stars and some snails and maybe some emerald crabs heard they were good for algae what do you think. Also when do you think i can add some of the cleaning crew.

i would wait till your tank cycles before you add a clean up crew. give it a month.
ide stick with melevs list, minus the pep shimp to be safe

RT6,
Putting in a CUC at this stage would be akin to a death sentence for most of them. There's nothing for them to CU!
So what is next then?
Best to make a real plan at this point, so as not to get something and then not be able to utilize it / keep it alive / or waste your hard earned cash. So...

Order the lights? (Have you decided for sure which light you are going to need? T5, MH, combo?)
Buy live rock locally or order on-line?
Order Koralia 3's or buy locally?
Get test kits?

I feel good about this, we could have a functioning tank by Memorial Day!

Thanks for the reply rumlad. I will not add the CUC untill the cycle is almost over when i get the rest of my rock. I will get all of my rock from a LFS. AS for the light i am using its a T5. Will order the koralias 3's soon. Got test kits already but might buy i brand new one.
