ReefWreak's 29g SPS Biocube Adventure!

And right now saving up for the Disney trip next year. Neither wife nor kid has gone so I will have to go all out in lodging and whatnot. So it will be a very expensive trip.
Disney is an expert at drawing money out of your wallet. I shudder at the thought of returning to Disney with my kids... not a vacation but work for us parents! lol!!!

I'm down to feeding the tank like twice a week. I'm hoping between the emeralds, less feedings, AND A LOT MORE VODKA (I'm at 2mL/day vodka and 1mL/day of white vinegar) that the bubbles start to fade away....
is feeding 2x/week ok for the fish?...

529 plan for me was started 3 days after daughter was born. I wish I could put in more then I do but need my 401K to grow more so then her college fund at this stage. She has a good nest egg in there though and her birthday/xmas gifts from my parents are contributions to her 529.

And yes Disney will be a drain but worth it. And I want my goofy ear hat while I am there darnnit...

I think so. I've historically fed that much in nanos without issue. I used to supplement every few days with pellets, but it's time to go lean until algae is under control.

Just because the fish look hungry doesn't mean they're starving! I've always had fat and healthy fish. If they start to look skinny, I know that's a problem.

I think part of the problem I have is portion control per feeding, so I've started thawing even my small dime-sized pieces of mysis and feeding half of it every other day, instead of feeding a larger amount less frequently.

Here's an interesting thread on feeding, and good advice:

"As much as will fit in each fish's mouth. Every fish has to fill his mouth daily as a baseline of what he should eat. Meat, however, is more 'nutrition dense' than algae, so allow the 'green' eaters about 3x that. That's a rough indication. But also check how much is falling down to be eating by the CUC, who also need to eat. If THEY are leaving food more than a minute---you're overfeeding."

I should feed more, and I think I will, but I think I'll reduce the quantity each time. Should I feed the fish as often as possible? Yes. If my tank is green and I start to dislike the hobby, is it better for my fish than feeding them less than I'd like to (but not letting them starve or go hungry)? No.

It's all a delicate balance, and daily feedings of frozen food has been leading to more bubble algae growth, which is taking over my tank and making me enjoy the hobby less, so hopefully that calms down and I can get back to enjoying the tank more.

I wonder if I could pay a tank maintenance person to come over and manually remove all of the bubble algae, and then hopefully it won't grow back with all the emeralds and nutrient control? Thoughts?

That's what our accountant keeps telling us to save for our retirement 1st before saving for kids. Once we retire, there'll be no more income for us but the kids can work and make $.
WOW, you actually saved the $ gifts from her grandparents?!. Impressive!...we spent those and prob owe our kids few bucks!... yes, we're bad parents... lol!!!

I gave my parents the ugift codes so they get tax credit for their donations.

And yes one must pay themselves first then the kids. My 401K is top priority for me as I dont want my kid to support me and for me to be there for my grandkids like my parents are for my tot. Plus she can take out loans if needed that I can assist with OR do as I plan and get a full ride athletic scholarship so I can use the 529 on pole dancing classes for myself and the wife when we are in our 50s or 60s just to see look on people's faces...

Yes that's the method I use to determine portion control, as much as they can eat in few minutes. One of my clowns (the male) often has a skinny belly even though I'm feeding them daily... is this common for clown belly to look thin?

I've tried removing my rock with red bubble and actually blow torched the bubbles at one point. Those that were torched died but there r still some red bubbles in other rocks. One local expert reefer (who's also a Master SCuba instructor) from whom I buy corals and fish commented that he doesnt' think bubble algaes are as bad as people think they are, that if there r few in tank dont pop them and leave them alone. I never got around to asking him what his reasons/thinking was though... he sells corals (some of them r pretty big) n few fish from his house in Parsippany, has many tanks and looks almost like a small fish store. Good quality stuff, can find him on CL under "frags galore"

How about removing rock with bubble and putting it in separate container in saltwater with heater and pump but with lid closed for a week with no light? I've read others doing this for GHA not sure if it'll work for bubble.

Relative to what? My female clown is much wider than the male because she makes eggs. I wouldn't call any of my fish skinny. Unfortunately, having spent enough time in the hobby and here on Reefcentral, I've seen skinny, so I know the difference.

They're not all that bad, when they stay in reasonable numbers. My problem is that they are 100% crowding out corals in some areas. And they're unsightly. One or two, no problem. The problem comes when you have a LOT of them. Look at the video at how dense of a population there are of them. I have big clusters of that all over my tank.

I think manual removal does help, but I really don't want to stress my tank out even further by breaking it down and breaking all of the bubbles off. Especially if some still come back afterwards. I did that for Green Star Polyps, and they did come back. Fortunately, there was a chemical solution to that problem :celebrate2:

I siphon when I go about breaking mine and it has helped tremendously. If I didnt have a last minute run out to WV this weekend I would be doing another bout this weekend siphoning out roughly 35 gallons while I remove the algae (for you you could crimp the tubing to decrease flow)

I might try some peroxide paste on a patch to see what impact it has. The peroxide should kill it AND handle the spores but not sure.

Relative to the female, who's twice his size but her belly doesnt look skinny like the male's. I'll try to take a pix later when i get home n post.

Oh yeah, I recall u mentioning that in one of your earlier posts. that's just crazy and amazing at same time how GSP can survive like that.

The clowns r too active so cant get a clear pix. But I did notice the yellow Tang I just got this weekend ate up all my red bubble algae!!! Finally! The Kole Tang I had never touched the bubble algae though so I was elated to see the rocks finally cleared after about a year!!!

Congratulations! That's really good to hear! I'm sure your clowns are healthy. Just keep them reasonably well fed, and read the thread I posted if you're curious about feeding recommendations.

Thanks! Yeah I was very happy I got the yellow tang, perhaps u can borrow one from a hobbiest who is nearby you if the emeralds dont work out?

Yes, I did read the thread thanks...kind of similar to how I'm currently feeding (as much as they can finish in few mins and not over feed). In the past I fed every other day but got lazy (3 kids) and bought an auto feeder that feeds daily. Too bad can't program it to feed every other day.

2 separate LFS guys said I should stop feeding flake food bc they'll increase phosphate and I should only use pellet food. But I don't like how pellets sink too fast down to sand and once it does the fish dont eat them, creating waste. What do you think about flake vs pellet? I prefer flake over pellet for my fish/tank.

yesterday when I came home from work I found the male clown dead on the floor outside of tank :sad2:

Do you think it's safe/possible to add another clown to tank? The female is somewhat aggressive, nothing vicious.

He's definitely talking about both.

Sorry to hear about the loss. As long as you get one much smaller (maybe even ask the breeder for a small male), it should be fine. May take a while for them to pair with each other, but eventually they should get there. Just be patient and keep them happy and well fed, and don't be disheartened if they don't immediately spend time together.
