refugium the current trend

I got out of the hobby as these were becoming the hot new thing now I am getting ready to set up a new reef and was wondering what the thoughts on these are today?

Almost every successful Reef has a refugium on some level, from a few pieces of rubble and some chaeto all the way up to a full on second display.

Hardly the 'current' trend either. I've had a refugium on my reef tanks since about 1995. OK, perhaps the chaeto-stuffed refugium is of more recent vintage :) Worthwhile if you can find the space, though not a requirement for a healthy tank.

Have had great sps tanks with and without them. IMO, not a necessity
+1

Forms of Carbon Dosing with Ultra low nutrient systems (ULNS) for SPS is pretty hot right now.
If you carbon dose keep your alk at 8.0 dkh or lower.

I use Aquaforest Pro Bio S with NP Pro with a GFO reactor running Rowaphos.
Others use NOPOX, Vodka and vinegar dosing. (Need a good skimmer)

I'm seeing people using products like Seachem Matrix and Marine Pure in their sumps.

JMO, Stay away from biopellets. They were hot and dying off.

This is a very good program and makes total sense and works. Take time to watch all 5 videos.

I'm running the ABC+ with the Colors C & D and Reef Energy for this. With outstanding results.

May switch to their NOPOX when I run out of AF products.

I had a refug on my 60G cube (6 years ago), when I upgraded to 120G I used bio reactor.. This week, I just got ride of the bio reactor and set up a refug...

I wouldn't set up a new tank without one.

My old 180g reef tank sprang a leak (not repairable). So I got a new CADlight 125g that came with a nice sump but no room for a fuge. So I added a 2nd 'stand' (an upgraded kitchen cabinet) and built a 50g cube so I could have a display refugium.
