Regal Angel Help

So I got a beautiful Red Sea Regal over the weekend. He acclimated without any difficulties and was doing fine in the QT tank. I offered him a frozen clam on a half shell but it showed no interest. No worries, I'll give it time. I decided to be a little proactive and dose some Prazipro. Then I was reading posts about the importance of a freshwater dip. I have some Paraguard on hand so I whipped up a batch and put him in the bath for 30 minutes. He didn't look too happy about it but I read that I should watch his breathing which seemed fine.

After transferring him back to the QT he is swimming erratically. I feel like something is wrong.

I will be so angry with myself if he doesn't pull through. This may be a case of less intervention on my part would have been more beneficial.

I'll try and post a video. If you have any ideas or a similar experience, I would love to hear it.

IMO, you should have gave him a little more time before doing all of this. Did you see it eat before purchase or was he shipped in? Actually for finicky fish, I have had luck with fresh clams from the local supermarket. Prazi-Pro is known to suppress appetites.

^ Right, always get the fish eating first unless you see signs of illness.

prazipro's active ingredient in humans causes nausea, and many people observe loss of appetite in fish.

Freshwater dip, did you match PH and have it will aerated?

IMO, freshwater dips are not needed/important.. others always dip their fish and have for years.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, the regal did not make it. I have read articles from Bob Fenner and others posted here about the merits of freshwater bath/dip immediately after acclimation, prior to placement in the QT.

Now this has become a situation that I would like to learn from. pH was the same, temp was 2 degrees higher at start of bath. Do most people freshwater dip/bath prophylactically or only if there is an issue? Dip for 5 minutes or less, or bath for 20-30 minutes?

You did a 30 min freshwater dip?

Some might disagree w/ me, but I didn't have success with freshwater dips. I never could get stuff right and it did more bad than good for the fish. So I started giving them 50 minute Formalin baths upon arrival. Has been working great. Also did you put an airstone in the tank when you was medicating the tank?

^^ this.

I found freshwater dips to be very harsh on most fish, especially if you go more than 5 minutes (and that's not long enough to have much of an effect on most things) 45 to 50 minute formalin dips on the other hand are generally well tolerated by most fish. Just don't use formalin when the fish have injuries.

As for Regal Angels, always make sure that you get one that is healthy and eats. Regals that are sick and/or have been on a prolonged hunger strike are very tough to bring back to eat. It often requires force feeding which is not that easy for the average aquarist.
