Regal Angel Primer

Open a dispute with Paypal or CC, whatever you've used. Get proof ready and you'll win. No worries. Definitely not a yellow plus the vendor is lying.

No, I paid almost 3. Not sure how I will get my money back. This is Petesfishplace.com btw. I read some negative reviews but it was from 2011 and 2012. Thought they would be better and after talking on the phone with him, I put the risk. Like I said, I was yearning for a YBR and after several weeks of waiting from my lfs, I was getting desperate and this is the only place that I found has it in stock.
The sad thing is, I'm not a fan of misbar. I always look for the most perfect stripes on clownfish.

Should of purchased from Coralimports or NYAquatics. Could of got two for just over 300$

Before hitting the submit button on disputing a charge on my Paypal, I decided to call Pete again. He picked up the phone and I told him the fish has been settled in the tank for 7 hours now and I'm pretty damn sure it's a regular regal and not a yellow belly. I sent him an updated picture and he said let him check it out. Maybe someone made a mistake.
He called me back within 5 mins and he said, sorry, someone made a mistake and he will send me another one and this time he will bag the fish himself and make sure it's a yellow belly. He promised to make it right for me and I will have a YBR next week. I'm not sure who I was talking to earlier that told me the fish was stressed. It sounded like him but I thought the accent was heavier than the gentlemen I just spoke to(Pete). He said to keep the fish I just received.
The good thing about all this is that someone is actually answering my phone call when I call. Will keep you guys posted.

Yeah, me neither. I check my clowns not only for complete bars but also for symmetry on both sides and good head and body proportions.

... Don't really know why it's so hard to get them at the moment but the yellow bellies seem to be real scarce. ...

Most yellow bellies in the US come from the Red Sea and the main collection sites are in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, both not the most peaceful places these days. That may be one reason.
Another reason might be that it is summer and the Summer temperatures there are crazy high which doesn't work too well for collecting fish.
It could also be that Europe is buying them up, though Europe gets usually more from the Maldives than the Red Sea (unless things have changed drastically over the last 10 years)
The most likely reason is that not many stores want to take the risk to stock up on such sensitive and fickle fish during the summer hole.
So maybe the supply will get better in the fall and winter months.

Though two stores around here got a couple of Red Sea regals lately. The only problem with them was that they were too big for my taste.

I really miss the days when I could drive down to DeJong and cherry pick them out of tank wall with hundreds of specimen... :sad2:

Around here YBRs go for $150 to $250. Only issue is that they are always quite big.
Blue bellies go usually for around $80, though sometimes even less. And you can find little ones. That's why I decided to go with them.

BTW: my two bluebelly regals have actually still a partially yellow belly, though I suspect it will fade away as they grow and get older.

I received my juvenile Red Sea Regal in November a few years ago, I believe the cooler temps bring more in?

Found this tiny regal angel today and decided to take him home. He is just 37 mm (~1.5") in total length and getting its second set of stripes.

He arrived today at the store and comes from the Philippines like my other two.
I put him in a 10 gallon QT with a good amount of Real Reef rocks that are covered in hairy algae. For now all I give him is live tigger pods.
He started searching the rocks right away and is picking something off the rocks (likely pods).
Now I need to keep my fingers crossed that he didn't came with any parasites. I didn't give him a formalin dip - I feel he is too tiny to handle it.

It doesn't look good for this little guy. He never went really after food, and started hiding 3 days ago. I feel he may have some gill infection. It may have been a mistake to skip the formalin dip :headwallblue:
By now he is quite skinny. I don't have too much hope for him to still come around :sad2:
Though I haven't given up yet...

The first two are doing much better now. It's now 42 days since I got them and the dominant one has pretty much fully recovered by now. This is how they looked when I got them:

The left one is the dominant.

And this is how he looks now:

Though I had to separate the two for now - the fin-nipping got a bit out of hand. The submissive one is still a bit skinny and needs to fully recover as well to be able to stand up against the other one. I will put them back together when both are equally well nourished.

Any updates? I've thought of ordering from him, but something didn't seem right. I'm eager to see what the conclusion will be...

I would hold off on ordering until my update on this situation. He did not have any YBR to ship last week(I also called several venders and they all out of stock). Will wait to see what happen this week.

As for the grey belly I received on 08/05, it has been in the main tank without eating the food I offer it. I tried everything including all sort of flakes, nori, fresh clam, fresh mussel, fresh oyster, and what I feed daily to the tank(Larry Reef Frenzy and Hikari mysis). It's not being picked on from any fish since it's the biggest fish in the tank. It looks very comfortable in the tank but it just doesn't want to do anything with the food I offer it. Even if the food come flying at its face, it just casually swim by it. I've been feeding so much the past week that I'm starting to see some brown patches of algae on the sand. It's very stressful and depressing when you see a fish not eating. It does nip on my SPS here and there. I'm almost at the point of giving up keeping any kind of angels in my tank. While I love them, it's hard for me to look at my SPS goes bald due to the polyps retracting from angel nipping.

They must have gotten some in the last days since they now list true Red Sea Regals on their website. Though they are with 4 to 5 inch kind of too big for me.

Is he actually eating anything off the rocks or just picking?
One other things to try are caulerpa or other macro algae. All the ones I had would go for the softer caulerpas (though usually not C. taxifolia)

NYAquatic stats on their website that they only ship regal that are eating:
"WE ONLY SELL REGALS THAT ARE ALREADY EATING IN OUR TANKS, SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY!"
I would hold them to that.

BTW, how big is he?

If you don't get resolution to your problem, you need to contact your CC company. He clearly spells out in his policies that he will refund your money or give you credit. If you show that to your CC company, they will side with you.

I feel your pain concerning the heart break over these fish. I ordered a true Red Sea from a sponsor here on RC and it died within 24 hours. Such a bummer. I was super disappointed.

Have heart and keep the faith. Failure is just another step on the way to success.

I've been looking at Pete's website for weeks now, and it doesn't seem to change or update at all. It says that he always has YBR's. His website looks nice initially, but since it never changes, it worries me. Not much info on here about Pete's.

NYAquatics seems like a good source, but guarantees only live delivery. Also, NYAquatics only gives store credit like many other online retailers. If your willing to take the risk, NY Aquatics has a True Red Sea right now. $209 bucks plus shipping which will probably be $60 or more because the box is going to be 18 pounds. Not sure how that works considering the Indo regal he is selling that is one inch less in size is shipping for 8 pounds....HUMMMMMM

When I looked around a month for a YBR, Petes was the only place have it in stock on their website. I called and he said he can ship. He did shipped, but a GBR.
The GBR is about 4.5". It pecks on the rock all day, goes after my millies and some acros. Saw it peck at the Trochus snails as well. Haven't seen any dead Trochus so I thin it's just pecking at something on the shell.

Hmmm...I called NY last week but they said they don't have any to ship. Maybe they just got a new shipment or waiting for one to eat and ready to ship. Either way, I was calling to get a feel on stock. I'll wait for Pete another week.

I have removed the GBR from the display into the refugium. This way there's no competition with food and he can go at it with the pods. I'm already seeing it pecking at the macro for pods. Will try an open clam or mussel later today. I do want this fish to live!
