Regal Angel Primer

It's two weeks now and this stupid fish is still ignoring all food I offer. The only thing it currently picks on are my zoas. Even oyster in the shell placed right next to the zoas is ignored :headwally:

Have you try LRS food which is kind of floating around but does not completely dissolve into particles?

Mine ate very little for the first couple of months and hid most of the time. I gave up on trying different type of food just fed the tank normally and it came thru. Now it eats only flakes. These animals are totally luck of the draw and we can only do so much.

As mentioned in my previous post my regal only eats flakes (nibbles at frozen food occasionally). I have had it for about 9 months now. Recently it has become more active and bold. He comes to the front whenever I approach waiting to be fed. To bulk him up I feed 4 or 5 times flakes daily. I feed Ocean Nutrition formula one and a good quality spirulina flake developed for fresh water herbivores (33% spirulina plus other veggie component. link). So he has been feeding very well for the last month or so. He does not eat a lot in each feeding.

The problem is that he has developed a fairly large belly compare to the rest of the body. Any one has seen this? Should I slow down the feeding? Maybe the rest of the body will catch on later? It's hard to see in the picture but hopefully you get the idea.

I tried pellets (for the clownfish) but doubt it would go after them.

I always had better luck with pairs - usually one learns from the other. Maybe I need to add one of my Philippine regals to show it how it's done...

Well, I probably will first try to pair up the two Philippine regals again before trying to mix and match the with the Red Sea regal.
Hopefully one is by now a bit larger than the other so that the roles are clear.

Personality wise I currently prefer my two Philippine regals over the Red Sea one. They peek out of their caves when they see me and look at me to check if there is food to get. Even at the store they always maintained eye contact - that's why I took them despite them being scary skinny.

This Red Sea one is acting like it has major depressions and is pumped up with meds.

BTW, DD has a nice 4" Philippine regal right now and it seems nobody wants it:

I almost came home with one today ... Wow!!!! was between 3/4' and an inch ... Smallest I've ever seen cute as a button, almost looked like a funky warped coloured damsel with white stripes.

Was it one from the Philippines?
I fear they catch them with cyanide. Otherwise those small ones are really hard to catch as they prefer to stay inside the rocks.

Regal Angel Primer

I really don't know I would have to ask! It was at one of my ex-employers stores and this time of year they usually go with Quality marine or with a local fish importer " Pisces Volans" instead imports straight from the origin country ... I mean other than the every two week shipping from Singapore ( but I personally doubt they would get such a fragile fish from there )
Meaning if it had to go through quarantine at someone's else's facility first than sold to the store some time has gone by... Chances are Cyanide caught fish will die in the first 4 -5 weeks about !?
I'll let him be , if he's mine to be he'll still be alive and gone unsold in two weeks [emoji5]

But thanks for the heads up [emoji106]🏼....I am already weary of all saltwater stock coming from the Philippines , I used to order mostly inverts, corals, sponges, anemones direct from there.

I am 0 for 2 on the very small ones. 2" to 3" is best.

I would set the ideal range between 2" and 4"

I tried one tiny (1.25") from the Philippines and he died after a week. Because he was so tiny I skipped the usual formalin bath, which may have been the cause for his demise as he later showed symptoms of a gill infection (spread gill cover but not much elevated breathing)

The 3" ones I got before that one did fine from day one despite being extremely skinny when I got them.

The 4.75" is still not interested in any food I offer.

Here's the tiny size that a LFS had...

Problem with cyanide caught fish is that they can be eating but dead for no reason in a week or two.

Yes.
It also always depends on what dose a fish got hit with.
A fish at the center of the cloud that got the concentrated load will likely die instantly.
Fish further out may live for a while but die later from liver damage.
Fish at the periphery of the cloud may survive it without long-term damage.

The catch is that you never know what cyanide dose the fish got when collected.

Mine was about 5" when I got it. Just give an example larger ones may work. Maybe you do not have a lot of other fish in the QT to compete for food to induce the feeding response?

I have it with a pair of percula and a pair of marine betta - all out all the time and always hungry.

BTW: I never had such outgoing marine bettas before. These two act more like free water fish than the reclusive cave dwellers they normally are.

Introducing a regal to a tank with emperor angel?

Introducing a regal to a tank with emperor angel?

Anyone have any views on introducing a regal angel to a tank that already has a small emperor angel in it (2-3")??

The tank also contains a Flame Angel and a variety of tangs and clownfish.

The emperor is very friendly and gets along with all other tank inhabitants, and is generally not the first to go for food either. The Flame is extremely quiet and tends to hide among the live rock/coral.

The tank is 3+ years old and both existing angels are about 2 years old. They are coral friendly, constantly crazing/picking but leave the coral alone as long as they remain well fed.

I wouldn't do it. Regal angels are rather on the shy side and may not do well with large aggressive (emperor) or overly active fish (tangs).
In my experience regals do best when they are the star of the tank and even better as a pair.
