Regal Angel Primer

Mine does great with tangs and several other small angels in my 180, however I would not put it in with an emperor unless we are talking a very large tank. How big is your tank?

It is currently in a 42 gallon tank, but that's only for quarantine.

I just found 2 cure little Indian Ocean yellow belly regals from Sumatra that will join it. These two were eating well at the store and will hopefully get the Red Sea regal out of its apathy.

BTW: according to LA/DD the regal was eating Mysis, brine shrimp and clams when they had it.

These are my new Sumatra Yellow Belly Regal angels.
They don't look too different from Red Sea regals, pretty much exactly like Maldives and have a perfect size.
Best: they were eating at the store and even while in acclimatization.

These pictures were taken during the formalin dip.

The smaller one, it still has the eye spot:

The Red Sea regal didn't like the larger one so I had to take him out again. The little one gets chased too but not too much. Despite that he is still picking food. I will see how it goes Sunday and if needed put them in their own QT (there's still a 20 long sitting around)

I kind of regret now that I took the DD regal. Not only was it twice as much as these two together, but it also gives me more headaches with feeding.

The store had a total of 5: 2 larger adults, two juveniles of the size of the bigger one and then that little guy - all eating. And the little ones only arrived on the 5th.
I picked the ones that were the most alert and active. They were always looking back at me what I found to be a good sign.
Only issue is that they have a Lymphocystis infection (the Red Sea regal got it too shortly after I got it) - an indication of copper treatment somewhere along their journey

What shop did you get these from? I just missed out on the one I was eyeing at Lucky Ocean in SF.

Today the smaller Sumatra regal and the Red Sea regal got along so I decided to release the larger Sumatra regal back into the tank. So far it looks like they get along. The little one is eating best, but seems to prefer Brine Shrimp. But it also takes Mysis and nips on mussels. The larger Sumatra also picks Brine Shrimp and Mysis but so far rather from the ground. The Red Sea still ignors everything... Let's see when the food envy sets in.

All 3 together:

(Didn't clean the front glass :()
The small Sumatra regal is the one in the middle, the Red Sea regal is peeking out at the right and the larger Sumatra regal is the one at the right.

Little snafu: it should have been ... larger Sumatra regal is the one at the left.

This evening all 3 were out together when I fed them. The two little eat well, especially the smaller, but the Red Sea still doesn't even look at food.

Beautiful pair you got! I got mine from AC as well. They have great fish at very good prices. Best of luck with them.

The little guys are out and about hunting for food. They also come and eat when I add food.
But the large Red Sea regal mostly hides in its cave and if it comes out it ignores all food.

Have you talked to DD?
I was considering ordering a regal in the future from them, but your luck doesn't make me seem very sure.

And what would all of you guys recommend as a minimum tank size for a regal?
Having read through this thread too many times i'm seeing numbers all over the board from 55 gallons to 125.

THRoewer is not the first to say his Regal from DD did not eat right away, there have been others. Now thanks to DD I have an awesome pair of Goldens that ate right away and are doing great, so I am not faulting DD but I think when the regals get re-shipped they start all over with the attitude of waiting 3 to 4 weeks to eat? My longest hold out to eat in the past was a Regal and a Chrysurus at 4 weeks, and both did great after that. They love to graze so I would say 120 gallon with 120 pds of liverock to pick on for a 4", for a juvenile 65 gallon with lots of liverock would be fine for a couple years.

My DD regal was eating in short order. These fish are all individuals and react as such regardless of who sells them. The one thing I can count on when buying from DD, is that the only disease that came from them is ich.
