Regal Angel Primer

You guys have some seriously awesome looking Regals on here. I've been wanting one for quite a while and finally decided it's worth the risk and pulled the trigger. I just have to get the dust off of my QT and make a nice temporary home for him.

I wonder where QM collected these since they are larger than normal juveniles in size?
So at what size do they suppose to loose their tail spot completely? This one (DD fish we are talking about) is 3.5 inches and still have his spot.

Is this because in our tank, our fish just do not grow as fast or as large? Mine, a blue chest, I would estimate at 3.25 inches and does not have the tail spot at all. The one I got from Alton a little larger at about 3.5 yellow chest, also does not have the tail spot at all.

Good question. Mine was purchased at the size it currently is, with no spot. The juvenile that Gimpy purchased was a yellow belly at 3.5" with the spot still present. You mention the blue chest and yellow belly you have without the spot, and their respective sizes. Michael had the Red Sea juveniles at 1.5"-2" with the spots, which I would expect for all Regals no matter the color or size up to 2.5-3"

I got my juvenile from Michael and it was 2" and by 3" it lost its spot and that was with a larger adult in the same tank.

What is the difference between an orange belly and yellow belly?

I thought there was only a blue belly and a yellow belly?

I have no idea. I know he isn't Red Sea but he is not from Indo. Any experts have an opinion?

He eats LRS, PE mysis, Nori. He hits on pellets but he spits them back out. They may be to hard for him.

Red Sea, Maldives, and Madagascar typically have the orange/yellow bellies. Indonesian ones usually have a more grayish belly.

From what I've seen so far the spot goes away at 80mm (3.15 inch) total length and is usually completely gone at 90 mm TL (3.5 inch).
This BTW applies equally to the Indian Ocean (YB) and Pacific (BB) regals.

The question is if this is size or age driven

That one looks like he is below 2 inch - he is just getting his second set of stripes.

Blue belly and gray belly are the same and come from the Pacific.
Yellow or Orange bellies come from the Indian Ocean (which includes the Red Sea)

The separation line is roughly at Bali. Regals from Thailand and Sumatra clearly belong to the "yellow" Indian Ocean variety. Regals from Australia, the Philippines, PNG, Solomons and Fiji belong to the "blue" Pacific variety.

This graphic may not be 100% correct but should give you a good idea of the distribution of each color form:
