Regal Angel Primer

As far as I know you can't tell the difference until they are larger. When they become adults then the Red Sea have more of a saturated color to them.

Any body have any thoughts on what I should do about the eye?
 
Epsom salt is probably the best treatment, especially since it looks like it was caused by an accident.

"Go to Walmart (or any drug store) and buy “USP” grade Epsom salt. Make sure it is plain Epsom salt, without any fragrances added in. Mix tank water in a jug with enough Epsom salt (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons) to treat your size tank. Slowly pour that into your aquarium.

Epsom salt will help relieve the swelling i.e. the popeye. This may (or may not) completely solve the problem, but it's an easy first step. "

Epsom salt is just magnesium sulfate, so its completely reef safe.

Popeye in one eye usually means injury, but popeye in both eyes usually denotes a bacterial infection requiring antibiotic treatment. Cloudy eye can be a bacterial infection or flukes.
 
I just did a fresh water dip. I did 10 minutes. I didn't plan on doing that long but the fish was active the whole time so I stretched it to 10. Couldn't see if any flukes came of it not. My lfs recommended maracyn plus made by Mardel. Does anyone see any reason I shouldn't treat with this. It says it treats for Popeye. I'm not thrilled about it killing off all the biological filtration in the tank though. I plan on doing 10 gallon water changes every other day and testing ammonia daily. Any critiques of this plan?
 
I'm on round 2 of the maracyn treatment. The eye does look a little better but not quite there yet. I have noticed a few white spots on the fishes fins It doesn't really look like ich. I have no experience with lymph not even going to attempt to try to spell the rest of that word. I hope you know what I'm referring to. I have a video on my phone but can't upload it. If anyone is willing I could text or email the video and maybe you can help with a diagnosis and treatment plan.
 
After 2 rounds of the maracyn plus the regal's eye appears to be perfectly clear. He does however have some white spots that I believe are lymph. I'm planning on treating with copper just to be sure there is no ich. I've been told this is one of the few angels that are ok with copper. The fish eats like a pig. Any thoughts on copper treatment?
 
I'm picking up my little Indian Ocean Regal on Friday hopefully. It's been at my LFS for two weeks and is eating like a horse.

Copper is the worst you could do if it is Lymphocystis.

The copper isn't for the lympho. The copper would be a precaution to make sure the fish wasn't bringing ich into the display tank after an over 10 week fallow period.
 
Species specific

Species specific

I want to build a species specific tank around a regal angel.

I don't have a lot of room so I was wonsering what the minimum floorprint is.

I've seen people have them in 120 gallons at 48x24x24...

Is it out of line to have only one fish being a regal in a 48x24x16?...

I'm looking for minimum tank size here without being ridiculous and unfair to the fish
 
My understanding with regals weren't that they were just difficult to get to eat, but that their dietary needs can't be met. That they eat, but fail to thrive due to malnourishment. That it's simply unknown as to what they eat exactly, and how often. Has anyone successfully kept a regal alive for any length of time. As in 2+ years?

I had one for 10 years and it was very much alive when I got rid of it.
 
Can I ask why the copper may make the lymphocystis worse? Is it because the reduced appetite of the fish during copper treatment?

That is incredible. What did you feed it? The whole diet thing has been what has worried me. I work from home so regular feedings are not a problem for me, but I'm not sure if there is a suitable commercial grade fish chow that would meet all the needs or if I'd have to shopNchop to do a proper diet. My emperor gets a stead meal of new life spectrum pellets, mysis, seaweed, I've offered big shrimp (diced) he didn't want it) and krill (a hit or miss kinda thing), and clams (again no go). I am thinking of adding sponges to his tank for grazing along with some plants. Over all he's very happy and fat, but I know a regal (should I ever dare) would not be nearly as easy.
