Regal Angel Primer

I've had mine in the QT for about 3 weeks now. He's still looking good and now eating Ocean Nutrition Angelfish formula. I want to get him in the display tank to forage for a more natural variety of food. Maybe one more week! I cannot believe that he served arriving in a 50F box with only 1/2" of water in his bag, Wow!
 
I picked up my first regal(angelface) about a month ago....a shy fish indeed. She ate mysis at the LFS but wont touch the stuff in my tank. But the good news is she does eate, the prefered food stuff is sponges off the live rock and some dried sea weed....just wish I could get her to eat some protiene.
 
Just got a pair of regals yesterday . Put them in the tank , and they went to the bottom to feed , straight out of the net ! However , the purple tang has been terrorizing them , and now they are not as interested in foraging . Hopefully he backs off soon .

I had the same problem with my purple tang. The Regal would hide behind a PH and not have a chance to eat.

I made a divider with some egg crate and kept them separated for 3 weeks. It gave the Regal time to get used to the new environment. The tang still harassed him afterwards for a couple of weeks more but it did take the pressure off the Regal till he got adjusted. Now they pretty much ignore each other.
 
Thanks for the advice . I couldn't put up a divider so I tried the old mirror trick . The Sohal and purple are so busy trying to defend against the new " intruders " they have lost all interest in the Regals . Problem is it upsets the Tusk and marine betta as well .
 
After a long wait, I finally ran across a Red Sea Regal locally. It is a 2" juv. It was eating at the lfs and nipping on the rocks. I was alittle worried how it would be received by my Multicolored Dwarf since they are about the same size. Once it was introduced, the Multicolored only swam up to it and checked it out, then swam off about it's business. None of my other angels paid it any attention. Within two hours it was swimming in and out of the rockwork picking on the rocks. It is hard to get a good pic of it at the moment. I will continue to try and get some good shots for my website. Here is a pic I was able to get of it picking on some of the rock in a cave.

Finally got angel face(the regal) to eat some protene. So far the only potene source I can get her to touch is the clams on the half shell. Othe than the dried sea weed.
 
Well, as tough as I thought the one I had was after the shipping episode, it all proved out too much for him. I came home from work today to find him lodged in the LR that I put in the QT to nibble on. That was an expensive and sad sight.
 
Sorry to hear that JEL. You and your angel had gone through alot of tough times. I was really pulling for you. Maybe in the summer when the weather is warmer you can try again.
 
I just acquired one of these yesterday after having read through all 80 pages of this lengthy thread so I'm definitely equipped with good information.

He's been getting braver and braver over time and venturing out here and there and he's also the biggest fish in the tank with no one else that could possibly harass him except for a Flameback Angel (Brazilian) that's half its size but they've ignored each other for the most part.

Seems to be nibbling on the rocks and glass but avoiding frozen mysis/brine/bloodworms. So I'll be looking into fresh seafood or just giving him some time.

The question I have is, I had ordered one that was labeled as Indo-Pacific but the one that arrived actually looked like this. It's a bad picture I know.

I remember reading in numerous places that the chest on the Indo-Pacific ones are either blue or grey but it definitely doesn't look blue or grey on the one I received. So did I wind up with a Red Sea one somehow?
 
For those with newly purchased both Red Sea and Indo Pacific Regal Angels you might want to freshwater dip them for 5 minutes to check if they have flukes. You can not see flukes on the fish unless you dip them. Its affecting alot of other angels as well and its quite common.

Last week I freshwater dipped a healthy eating Red Sea Regal and about 25 flukes fell off.

Last month my friend dipped his Indo Regal Angel and it had flukes as well.

One of the symptoms is the Regal stops eating towards the end and mysteriously dies the next day.

Finally after two and a half months I got my regal eating frozen mysis and brine. The clams on the half shell I have been feeding must have been the pefect apitiser! My theoy is that the clams on the half shell served as a tainer food for eating meat in the water column.
 
My Regals are now chasing away the purple tang that terrorized them the first day to get to the clam and mussel . The female actually took a nip at the tang !!!!
 
A quick up date on my two juvis.

They are eating well- brine, krill pacifica as well as algae, etc on the LR, in fact almost anything i put in.

The problem is they just about tolerate each other with no fighting but they do go to great lengths to avoid coming face to face.

One is dominant swimming in the open most of the time-the other spends most of its time in the rockwork, it is getting enough to eat (i think) but as it is totally dominated by the other it continues to worry me, especially as they grow and become sexually mature.

So watch this space......................
 
Here are mine. I had one already that has been in captivity for at least a year. Went to the lfs a couple weeks ago and they had another one that was really alert and pecking all around the tank. Asked to see him eat and he showed a ton of interest in the food although he wasn't always swallowing everything. Brought him home, took about four days for him to starting eating everything I put in the tank with gusto. I thought number 2 was a lot larger than number 1, but they turned out to be almost the same size. Luckily, number 1 was not aggresive at all and no 2 is already the dominant fish. They haven't really paired up yet, but the chasing is not bad at all and seems to be getting better with time.
