Regal Angel Primer

Just ordered my Red Sea Regal from reefhotspot. Will be getting it in about 2 - 3 weeks. Read most of this thread weeks ago. Plan is to acclimate him and add him right to the display. Any quick tips?

My regal took a turn for the worse tonight. She has been eating nealy eveything like a pig, frozen mysis, brine, angel formula, clams on the half shell and dried seaweed.

Well tonight at feeding time she did not touch the frozen foods or dried sea weed, but only nibbled on the frozen clams, I also noticed that she is hiding more often in the caves......I sence something isnt quite right.....I am consideing a fresh water dip for any unseen parasites. Nothing seems abnomal for physcial appearance...Any suggestions?

You might want to check for Flukes. FW dip it for 5 minutes and see if you can see some clear opaque sesame sized fall off the fish, gills, etc. You cant see flukes on the fish until you dip them.

Lost of appetite and hiding is one of the symptoms of flukes.

Make sure your fresh water is the same temp and pH as your main tank

Hope your angel pulls through

Is your Regal a Red Sea or Indo type?

If your Regal has flukes, which it is showing symptoms of, the rest of your fish likely have fluke. I would treat the tank with Prazi-pro. It is more effective than just a FW dip. I have LPS in my tnk and Prazi did not hurt them or my inverts, plus after 3-5 days you can just add carbon to the system to clean it from the water. Most of the large angels carry some form of fluke, you need to act quickly. Good Luck.

Besides using Praziquantel to treat internal and external parasites, I also had luck with Metronidazole. If worse came to worse my last option would be a formalin bath, but you would need to remove the fish from the system to treat.

To take an informal Poll of the Regal owerers here:

How many have Regal's that do NOT bother LPS or zoo's ???

I really, really want a Regal for my new 240, but i also love LPS and zoo's.

Haxter too soon to tell but so far so good, in a mature tank mostly sps- some zoos and a couple of chalices, but they are out before the fish!

Haxer

I only have sps and some clams in the tank with the regal. She hasent niped at ither. From the posts of hobbiests experience in the past, zoanthids would be like candy for the regal.

By the way the regal is back to her nomal eating habits! I have yet to treat the tank with any meds....fed ex let me down, next day air is turning into three day air!

might be taking the plunge after a year of shopping. I have one on hold at a LFS waiting for it to eat it's a yellow belly and about 4". It's in with some agressive fish tried to talk them into moving it to another tank. It came in about 4 days ago. at first it was hiding now it swims out in the open. I go in every day hoping it'll eat, looks interested but has yet to take a bite. I'm tempted to get it now but think I should be patient.

dvmsn--how did you come by the urchin in the bottom pick? Just curious, I have two which hitchhiked on live rock over the past three years.

Don't do it. Wait for one that is aggressively eating.

you saying to pass on this one? or wait till it's eating? I've been patiently waiting this long a bit more won't hurt. Have you had your regals since 04? (checked out your gallery)

I tried a juvi about 6-8 weeks ago.... He was picking at food, but not attacking... I had to spot feed for him to just get about 3-4 bites... the fish made it 5-6 days and passed on... :(

I am also waiting for my LFS to get one that is eating... They have had a 5 inch specimen, and he hasn't eaten in 6 weeks... he is wilting away... They tried everything, clams, you name it...
