Regal Angel Primer

Here's mine, have had it since May 2013.

Not sure if I would call her "big"? She's about 5 1/2" - 6". Tank mates are a majestic angel (8 yrs old and about same size), a milliaris butterfly and 5 chromis.

Has anyone used De Los from national fish pharm to treat for flukes?
It seems like a strong medication. And to be honest, the only reason I'm considering using it is because everyone said I need to treat my regal for flukes. I don't know if my regal even has them. The lady at NL fish pharm told me prazi isn't reliable. Any advice/experience?

I have used De-Los in the past and it is very strong and harsh on fish. I lost a couple of angels and butterflies while in treatment. It is obviously pharmaceutical grade and you should probably dose less than recommended. I have not used De-Los since 2008ish and wouldn't risk it. I use a combo of 2 weeks of Prazi, then one treatment of API General Cure or just straight Metro.

Also, wouldn't you expect an employee of NL Fish Pharm to say a competing medication is not effective and then push their own product instead? Prazi works, but you have to do at least 2- 7 day treatments of it to be effective.

ETA - She's, (guess-timation based on length of gill spines), been in my care since Nov 07. I purchased her from Diver's Den.

If I'm seeing those spines correctly that's a male. Those are large spines. I've seen females in person and they have basically no gill spine what so ever.

I've seen a lot of Regal Angels with significantly larger gill plate spines....I just assumed this was a female.

Either way, I like the fish and it does well in my system, so I'm happy to have it.

Judging by the second picture it looks like a female to me as well, a beautiful fish either way. I love the broadness of the white bands on the Indo regals.

Hi maxxII,

Beautiful Regal you have there.
From your experiences of keeping the Regal that long in a 120 gallons tank, do you think it lives a comfortable life in that tank? I am about to upgrade my tank to a 120 gallons (4'x2'x2') in a few month and really like to have a Regal Angelfish like your.

Regal will be the only big fish in there along with a pair of clowns, Yellowtail damsels.

I'm sure once he does a one on one with the fish, gets its take, he will then be able to give you an accurate answer as to the mind set of this fish in that size tank.

There is really no way to know exactly how the fish feels or thinking. However as a human being we can certainly guess from seeing how the fish swim and its behavior. I kept a Purple tank for many years in a 75 gallons tank. At first it was happy and calm and friendly with other fishes. As the years passed, it get more grumpy and sometimes swim really fast back and forth. So I guess that it isn't too comfortable in my tank, so I sold it to another reefer friend with a 300 gallons tank. It is much calmer in that big tank.

I guess what I am asking him is whether or not his Regal swims calmly in the tank or always looking for a way to get out of it.

Hey guys,

My LFS has a good sized Red Sea regal at a really good price, and he's eating well. He's a little on the skinny side (I imagine they don't feed the tanks that much...) but I think I could easily fatten him up if I took him home. While he's definitely a yellow belly, he has some "gray" mixed in his yellow/orange regions throughout his body. I haven't really seen this before, and I'm assuming it's from poor nutrition or stress since he came into the trade. My question, is it reasonable to think color might improve with a better diet and more frequent feedings?

Hi everyone. I will be getting an indo regal this week. It has been held at the lfs for me for a few weeks and its eating great. He will be going into qt for 8 weeks as I do with all my fish. I usually do prazipro and hyposalinity while in qt. Has anyone kept a regal in hyposalinity? Is it advised?

Thanks!

I lost two in qt both started out ok not eating great but eating than slowly day by day they ate less and less and I lost them. My current Regal was in qt for about five days than in the tank and this is longest one I have had I think its five weeks now
