Regal Angel Primer

So far it has been 7 months for me with a red sea regal and he is doing really well. The whole saga on him is here in the Boston Reefer's board:

I tried pairing him with a partially juvi colored regal, but lost the juvi. Details here:

It has been about three months that I have had the second regal and almost two months since they have been tanked together. The new one is doing well, gaining weight and filling out slowly but surely. They get along and time will tell if they do well for me.

Those threads are pretty picture heavy, but I am a terrible shot when it comes to fast moving fish and the bright yellow seems to throw off my camera, so be ready for lots of out of focus shots. :)

I'm especially interested to hear opinions on the sex of the fish.

i'm always looking for a pair for mine as well but dont see them offered at the LFS very often and if they are they're huge or dont eat.

ahhh, one question....looks like your original regal has long cheek spines(which i think might mean it's a male) anyways, does your new one have short cheek spines?
I'm curious because mine has short cheek spines and i wantt to get another that has long spines.


....edit, sorrry, i just looked through the pics and see that the new one does have short spines. Maybe this can be kinda used to tell sex? i dont know.

It is so hard to tell when they are little. I thought the first one might be a male and thought the second one might also be a male (the one who didn't make it) and think the third might be a female. The first one did seem to be a tiny bit more aggressive with the second than with the third, but I didn't have them in the same tank long enough to tell.

I'm still not sure if I believe the cheek spine thing. Both of mine have different length spines on either side of their faces and you can look at 5 pics of them and see 5 different lengths just because of the way they are holding them out or close to their face when the shot is snapped.

The plan always was to find a good home within my reef club if the pairing didn't work out, but it seems to be going better than I hoped. :)
 
My baby regal is doing well. Seems to be eating but hides alot now as I have a 4" Blue Line in with it now (which is a total pig). They bith in hypo now. :)
 
Glad to see this thread still going strong. My Pacific Regal is still healthy and happy after 14 months in my tank. I'll try to post some updated pictures, but I have some pictures somewhere back in this thread, perhaps prior to the split.
 
Same here, the Twins are doing well. They are both nice and chubby, However, in true Twins (Arnold and D. DeVito) fashion, the more dominant one has gone on a growth spurt and is now longer and bulkier, while the smaller regal maybe put on a centimeter or so only. They are both absolute pigs still.
 
After 22 yrs of Marine fish keeping, I think Im ready for Red Sea regals...
I have a couple of questions:
1.Anybody here kept them with Centropyge spp.?
2.I saw a pic of a Regal and Acan in this thread, but I'd like to ask if anybody had problem with a Regal and Acans?

I have two red sea regals and they are with a potters angel no problems after two months so far. I also have a few different acans in my tank as well and the regals have never bothered them.
 
vili_shark: A healthy RS regal is pretty tough. I have one with lots of centropyge, flagfins and a huge goldflake. He doesn't take @$%$@% from anyone. But he was quarentined and had fattened back up and eating everything with vigor before I introduced him.

PR: Does your regal like spectrum pellets? I have found that most angels just go nuts for it. That is about all one of my flagfins would eat the first two months.
 
Vili, as LA mentioned, healthy RS aren't wimps at all, but they aren't an overly aggressive fish either. In the beginning, mine would pick almost every coral, acans and blastos however (even though they look pretty yummy), they would ignore. Fortunately, I now only very, very rarely notice them picking at corals.

LA, Yup, they go nuts for the spectrum pellets. It's the staple food I feed. Spectrum Pellets along with Formula 2 flake and/or pellets everyday for them. Frozen Mysis probably once a week.

I actually use the Spectrum Thera+A pellets ("Non-Medicated Anti-Parasitic Formula"), 1mm size. But the entire marine line is golden.

Thanks for the answers.
I think I'll try to put a couple of Red Sea Regals in one of my tanks and see what's happening, I have a couple of Multicolors and a Golden there which I dont wanna lose cause of the Regals though.

I feed with spectrum food as well, but I dont like the idea that they use Soy as their protein source.
If I could I'd feed much more of the Japanese food, but it's not imported regulary.
