Just started to drip this little beauty

from the Red Sea

my brother got one last year around this time from the Red Sea and it starved to death. Just wouldn't eat anything

I had one a few years ago it lived for over a year and a half then I made the mistake of not QTing a firefish and lost lots of amazing fish. He or she has already started trying to eat its poo during acclimation so I am hoping it has a great appetite!

No he was a special order so I am hoping for the best. He is in QT now and its lights out but he seems to be settling in.

Morning and we have made it through the first night. He has started exploring a little but is still very shy but growing more comfortable by the hour. Starting picking or grazing on some live rock but obviously has some discomfort in his gills as he keeps swiping them on the rock. He only does this where his gills are, guessing parasites? So I suppose I will start copper earlier than I would like. I was hoping to get him eating well first. Anybody else have any suggestions on what could be the issue or any treatments?

Flukes are a possibility, if you are comfortable doing a fw dip that is the best way to confirm. I have a regal in qt now that is handling cupramine very well, I ramped up the dose slowly over 6 days and I've seen no ill effects. Good luck

Here is the million dollar question Cupramine or Coppersafe. Its a 55 with about 35 pounds of live rock. This is a dedicated QT not worried about the rock absorbing the copper. Also what should the ramp up dose be for a 55 if I go with Cupramine?

Cupramine, and you'll want to remove any rock during the treatment. It would be very difficult to maintain therapeutic levels of copper with it constantly being absorbed. My regal is getting her treatment in a bare hospital tank with only PVC, a heater, powerhead, and a hob filter. I prefer to dose 1/4 of the recommended dosage every other day over a 6 day period, bringing my final concentration to .375mg/l.

Dont wanna remove the rock but the tank is BB i just dont wanna stress him out by changing things at this point. Does anyone have any experience with Prazi?

Looking good tonight out exploring quite a bit, ironically the Starry Blenny who I got yesterday also is the shy one. Have started copper so I hope he responds well and he even just tasted some PE Mysis saw me watching and got spooked, it was hilarious like he didnt want me to see him eating. Hope he gains more interest in foods. Merry Christmas to all fish geeks!

What an amazing Christmas morning. Not only has he stopped scraping on the rocks but he has one heck of an appetite! High hopes for this guy

Heed REA17's advice. Use Cupramine for the treatment and remove the rock before you add the Cupramine and while you are treating with Cupramine (or any copper). The rock will remove the copper from the water and you won't have a proper dose of copper to treat the fish effectively.

Also use PraziPro to treat for flukes.

I get the fish eating well, then do a PraziPro treatment, water change, start Cupramine (ramp up slower than the directions on the bottle - 1/3 dose on days 1, 3 and 5 or 1/4 dose on days , 3, 5, and 7), do another PraziPro treatment, remove Cupramine from the water after 4 weeks, and observe another week or two. Total quarantine time is typically 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for the info, I will be doing a 12 week QT on all fish but even longer on the current guys since the new DT has yet to be delivered. I have a copper test and will be monitoring it and making adjustments as needed, Prazi will begin soon but I may follow your schedule in the future. Had to go with coppersafe as I couldnt get cupramine on Dec 24th.

If you have calcareous (calcium-based) live rock you will not be able to maintain a stable level of copper in your QT.

The only 2 test kits I like are Seachem (can be hard to read) and Salifert.

Good luck.

Can you do prazi and copper at the same time? Since it may not be as effective due to my rock. Which I am slowly replacing with PVC hiding spots I just dont wanna make any sudden bio changes. One piece of rock per week

Why is it recommended to use Prazi for flukes, wont copper treat that as well. He definately has flukes as I can see them still hanging.

If you have flukes visible, you need to treat for them right away or they will get in the gills and kill the fish and a couple of days.

Copper does not kill flukes.

PraziPro is the best treatment for flukes and has proven to be a very safe medication. Like Rea17, I have used PraziPro and Cupramine together but never tried PraziPro with Coppersafe. I imagine it will be ok but don't really know.
