Renton's Upgrade

Wow, fantastic. You northern Ohio'ers have it all.

Are you still using the custom BML strip to supplement the SOL Blues?

Tank Video Part 2 is up:

Than has done an awesome job with the tank video. Your tank is looking great Nathan!

Do you remember the LED combo you used, Than says mostly cyan? Are you happy with it? Is this one of the early dimmer strips or one of the newer HO strips?

Another great video!

Below is the build I made. You can see the colors I chose to arrange over each 12" segment. I made it purely as a supplemental light and went heavy with green and cyan because I felt those colors made reds and pinks of the corals pop a bit more. I am not sure I would say that it has had any great benefit in terms of growth or health of corals, but I like the colors it helps accent. Also, I only ramp it up to a max 70%.

Thanks Nate.

I built a custom fixture using the new HO lens but I went with a mix of warm and cool white and generally the same mix of RB and Blue as their 20K spectrum but I dropped the 405 in favor of all 420 diodes. At the time I was supplementing a Maxspect Razor and I really wish I had done what you did and concentrated on visual appearance instead of performance.

Just figured I would stop by and say that your reef tank is absolutely amazing!
I'm glad I had the opportunity to view it in person when I picked up the frags I got from you the other day. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions and for the great frags I picked up!

Nice meeting you and glad you liked the tank. I am happy to talk reefing anytime!

New bio pellet reactors, so much easier to top off the bio pellets. No more reactor thumb screws!

I am sure that the Wolf, much like myself, was walking around MACNA thinking to himself how can I improve my system. I need to eliminate and streamline tasks/chores that are a pain in the neck and sometimes get neglected.

Now, I cannot speak for the Wolf, but in my case I had neglected filling up my bio pellets because I had a giant reactor with thumb screws. To be able to add bio pellets I had to drag the reactor out of the sump which is housed under the stand. Undo the 8 thumbscrews, pull the grate out and create a big mess. Then reverse all of that to put it back in.

Recently, I had let the bio pellets almost deplete and nutrient levels had risen in my tank. I then added a bunch of bio pellets all at once because doing so gradually would be such a pain. Of course nutrient levels quickly dropped. And of course this ticked off a few corals. So, while I do not claim to be as wise as the Wolf, I think he would agree that the transition to these easy to fill reactors was a good move.

Did you use all new bio pellets in the new reactors, or did you recycle the ones that were in your larger reactor? What brand of bio pellets did you use?

I just used swapped the pellets from the old reactor into the new reactor. I was surprised at how fast the pellets had depleted. Estimating, I would say close to 400ml of pellets were used up in the past 2 months. I would have added a few more, but I am all out.

Getting some more pellets today.

Currently, most of the pellets are the Two Little Fishies NPX pellets. I will be adding some ecoBak Plus to the mix as well.
