Replace glass cover for Metal Halide

Hi all,

One of the glass cover for my 175W Metal Halide fixture is broken.

Is it ok to replace the glass cover with acrylic? I can't seem to find the UV glass cover. I have tried to call and email odyssea, but no responses. This is an odyssea light.


Any suggestions is appreciated,

Is it an DE bulb ? (( I know it says 175, but I am sure that some odyssea lights are actually DE bulbs )).

If that is the case, make sure you aren't running that bulb without a shield over it.

it is an DE bulb.

SE bulb is ok to run without shield.
DE bulb must have uv shield or the uv will harm corals.

I have heard of people working in their tank and getting the equivalent of a bad sunburn because they didn't have the shield. I would leave the broken one in place (if possible) until you can replace it. Or leave that bulb off until replaced.

+whatever on replacing it with glass...

A local glass shop should be able to cut you a piece dirt cheap. Definitely less than $10.00, probably less than $5.00. Just make sure to get the edges sanded down so you don't cut yourself.

I went to the local glass shop and he cut a $5 piece. i used it for less than 10 mins, it cracked. :-(

He said if you want UV, have to special order.

Agreed with Tswfity, get to the glass shop and get a piece cut. Shouldnt be more than a couple dollars, and I'd leave the lamp off until you get it fixed. There's a good risk of burning stuff if not.

Mmm... wish I would have caught this thread earlier. I was gonna say regular glass will shatter under those bulbs. My fixture comes with special glass... and to protect that I've been putting tempered glass between my fixture and the water.

Sorry about that... I Just looked at my response and realized I didn't specify what type of glass.

As you've found out already, regular plate glass won't stand up to the heat. There's no need for special UV glass though. Regular tempered glass works and it's a whole lot cheaper.

Ok i have the same problem kind of. I have 3 150 MH HQI's and no cover at all. I got this light "used" even though it was brand new and it works great but i have no idea what brand of fixture it is. I know i need UV Glass now to cover but have no idea where to get it or what to buy. Help!!
i have been running with out the cover for over a year now not knowing any better

Ok i called some local glass shops and they say they need to know the specs of the UV glass needed. Is it 100% blockage I assume. And i would need tempered. Correct? Thanks

Tempered glass of any kind is fine. I don't think any particularly high UV blockage is needed. Mostly, you'll want the UV-C absorbed, as I recall.

You could ask at the store what kinds of glasses are available, but mostly you need one to absorb UV-C. I think most kinds of glass will do that.
