Rescue Clam

OK- have too many Atipshia and Mojos in my corner office tank for me to take it anymore they are actualyl stinging corals and the clam now. The setup does not allow me ( Childproof setup = canopy bolted to corner/walls in my waiting room) to use the typical killer power, pastes, juices, etc as it is a tall tank on a tall stand which allows for a better sump. Anyhow - I have resigned myself to purchasing a butterfly (Copperbanded ??) to eat the Atips and Mojo's ( hopefully/maybe). I have corals in there that he may go after- but they are established colonies or I have duplicates in the home setup. My only issue is the 5-6 inch clam I have that will probably be on his menu also. So, does anybody know how to get a clam to detach from a rock he has been attached to for several years? The large rock he is attached to also has the pests on it - so I cant just take that rock out and put him in the home tank. I am afraid if I force him off he will tear. Help appreciated.

Ted

You can use a razor blade on the foot as close to the rock as possible as a last alternative. Mine would let go of the rock and walk off when I would have the powerhead directed at it. Put another powerhead in the tank and have it blast the mantle and see if it lets go. I have also read where someone used ice cubes on the foot to get it to let go but never tried it myself.

Ask superstein what he's doing with his clam....:) In all seriousness, I suspect that one of the things that might be causing his clam to detach would be the flow, so the powerhead idea seems like a solid one to me.

OK - will attempt the powerhead thing this weekend. Cloaker- do you still have any of those powerheads you had for sale?

Yea, you just need to get your clam in my tank and I am sure my clam will clue yours in how to get loose in no time :)

Actually Cloaker may be right about the flow. The area where I had my clam was a high flow - and I initially tried putting him back there. I later tried in a different area but it is also high flow. So flow may be your answer (but then again mine was happy for half a year where he was til detaching)

Yes, I still have some of the off brand powerheads...one is an aquaclear (maybe not big enough for your purposes) but one would definitely be powerful enough. Let me know if you're interested.

I will have to look in the shed to see if I have any or not- I am thinking I have a few- but with my knee problem it may just be easier to buy yours rather than moving stuff and finding my aquarium bins of "junk".

OK - borrowed a Maxi-jet 900 with magnet holder from Mark - thanks- have it above and to the side spraying the clam- he definitely does not like it- hopefully will detach with in a day or two. Anybody know of a store that has a Copperbanded butterfly for sale?

yes- they usual have one in stock or have one on order. I just had not been in there lately- I would check there first due to the location = 1/2 mile form my house. Are you going to the meeting tonight?

no. I'm picking up some overtime tonight, so I'll miss the meeting. Gotta make sure to clear the schedule for the raffle in December.

Well - so far - no movement- but he is not happy - hopefully he will detach or I will have to quit as I am afraid I will hurt him.

Ice on the foot works well for detaching Nems, the same may be so for clams. If you can reach the foot, try and ice cube.

Also thought about buying some Bernai nudibranch ( spell??) - then I would not have to take out the clam- but I don't think they eat MOJO's like butterflies do. Anybody know any local Nudibrach growers.

Well 4 days of direct moderate flow causing him to be half closed did not make him move a bit. SO, I guess I will have to go another way. Either way I need a Butterfly- so that will be step one, then I will have to try the ice cube method while I am isolating the butterfly in a hospital tank for a while.

well I picked up a Copperbanded Butterfly yesterday at the wet pets sale- he is hunting as I write- he looks good- but I have not had the time to actually see him eat anything. "Fingers crossed"!!!

Hey Ted- I bought one of their CB's on Thursday he ate all my aptasia the first night. Let me know what else you get yours to eat. I'm trying mysis and brine shrimp with mine.
