Rescue Corals

Nothing really, I keep them low in the tank, target feed them every other day at night, stable params, temp, and salinity. I didnt even dip these corals just because how bad they were. I figured anymore stress will be pretty bad. I dipped the others in iodine and kent coral dip but not the acanthophyllias. What are you target feeding? I use mysis, oyster feast, roggers reef food, and brine. Gemini Aquarist (a fellow RC member and friend) uses Doc Ecos egg mix, mysis, phyto, and oyster feast. He has rescued quite a bit of corals as well with his food mix.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack!

Sorry - my computer bit the dust, so now I'm back & better than ever!

Great job everyone! I can't believe this thread is still going!! You all rock!!

Since I started this hobby, I found a soft spot for near-death corals and unwanted corals. These are some of my best examples. Please share if you have also saved corals from near-death (not brown corals that colored up...but truly nearly dead corals).

I've set aside part of my QT tank for rescuing corals - when they recover I either resell them so I can buy more near-death corals or they go into my display. It's a very rewarding side project of the hobby, and I hope other people will do the same.

Now this...such a reward!!!

Welcome back! Still got these?

I sold everything when I moved across the country except the last Favia. It's massive now, and there's no way a photo can show just how big it is. The longer I have it, the more amazing it gets. In the last photo, if you squint really hard, you can kinda see that the mouths have a bit of orange to them. Well, the mouths are very much orange now - phenomenal!

Very cool. Maybe a photo of some of it?

I still haven't transferred my old hard drive to my new one yet. Let me work on that, and I'll get some photos up soon. :)

This just means you need to start up again and start rescuing again!

That looks pretty bad. I agree with many of the comments in the thread (you definitely shouldn't have any ammonia!) However, let's go over the rest of your tank details just in case that's not the only thing.

Please give us the following with a recent test (along with what you use to test):

Salinity/specific gravity:
Temp:
pH:
Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
Alkalinity:
Calcium:
Magnesium:

Describe your tank inhabitants (crabs, fish, snails, etc.):

Describe your lights:

Describe your tank flow:

Describe your husbandry (water change schedule, media change schedule, dosing, etc.):

i just noticed you replied in this thread to my question. the Acan has died unfortunately and i had one of my leathers have a small bit of bleaching. i believe i have found out the cause of my ammonia issue. with some luck the bio filter will come back into balance before anything eles in the tank suffers.

my water parameters are good otherwise
nitrate 0
phosphate 0(phos-zorb)
calcium 400-425
kh i believe was 12 when i checked a week ago
sg is 1.024
temp 77-79
lights one daylight one 460nm one 420nm (new lights)
canister filter cleaned bi-weekly
water changes 10-20% weekly

live stock:
snail(profile pic)
6 other snails
skunk shrimp
sea hare
coral beauty
cormis
cardinal
2 toadstool leathers
2 paly colonies
small pulsing Xenia
small branching hammer
small ricordia(spelling?) mushroom
2 green mushrooms
lots of feather dusters and spaghetti worms
think that's it.

I bet the ammonia and that coral beauty were to blame. Whenever someone says they have one coral going downhill, there's almost always a coral beauty in their livestock list. They're infamous for nipping when you're not watching.

...the ONLY reason I don't own an angel fish.

I've got more! Favias!

This one colors up in a very nice yellow/green fluorescent under blue LEDs

I really thought this one would be a goner.

Rescue Corals

Got a bunch of new rescues. Sucks I didnt get the before pics. Some zoas that suffered 3 days in Tennessee cold weather (delay from weather) they are slowly coming back. 2 torches and 2 hammers that I had to take to the bandsaw to save from brown jelly and white fungus and a small acan.

That Tennessee weather was rough a week ago. Were just not prepared for that kind of snow and ice. Rednecks and ice just don't go hand in hand. LOL.
