Rescue Corals

Maisek - Page 1 has a good bit of info, but there is quite a bit of info scattered throughout the thread. I'd say 95% is troubleshooting the problem correctly and the 5% is implementing the correct solution. :)

Mhayes - thanks for keeping the ball rolling on this thread! You've got so many impressive saves!

Maroonman (and MHayes) - I kept having the same problem Mhayes mentioned where the trachyphyllias just kept receding until they died. I've finally managed to get a near perfect rate lately (more about this later.) I dip the coral in a 10:1 tank water:3% hydrogen peroxide mix for 20-30 seconds. Then, I dip the coral in a CoralRx dip (manufacturer's instructions). Then, I dip the coral in 2 cups tank water to 0.5ml Bayer Advanced Insecticide (from your local hardware store) for 15 minutes. For whatever reason, doing only one of those dips doesn't work. If I do all three, the coral survives. I also superglue the coral's tissue to the skeleton where it is receding...unless the recession has entered the oral disk or if there is obvious infection...then I cut the skeleton and glue the cut tissue.

jason angel - any luck?

greg1786 - yikes, that's a bad one. How's it doing? Hopefully it was just neglected like you said. When I see corals like that in a healthy tank, it's usually a nasty bacterial infection. It definitely needs daily food until some color returns.

jstn - that lobo is crazy tiny! I'd still feed him to encourage growth and hopefully heal faster. He obviously went through some trauma!

Hi MechEng. You've got some wonderful tips and inputs, I've been following this thread for some months now and its extremely helpful.
Can you post a video showing how you superglue a coral tissue to its skeleton?

Thanks!

Ooohhh... I haven't yet, but I can add that to my list! I'm definitely no videographer though. LOL Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry I disappeared!! The last few months have been quite insane. After this week, I hope things will calm down.

JRR1285 - wow...you don't see many wall hammers survive that sort of ordeal. Nice job. What is BJD? Sorry, not familiar with that acronym.

johnike - so jealous!! Those are my favorite corals, but all the ones I've found to rescue are missing all of their mesenterial filaments. What was wrong with it when you got it?

jstn - any updates?

BJD = Brown jelly disease. Usually a death sentence for euphyllia from what I have researched. Lucky and happy I saved it.

I picked up a Elegance the other day for pretty cheap. Its an aussie that was in a tank crowded by flowerpots and frogspawn. I ended up getting him for $30.

He seems to have opened up ALOT more since the first few days. The part that looked 3/4 dead perished but the rest is still there. Ive been feeding 2 cubes of mysis each day which he seems to take well. I know its very hard to bring back an elegance that is dying since its one piece. If anyone has done this b4. Mabye you cam PM me. Anyway wish me luck and ill keep posting about its progress

jtisle506 - I managed to save an elegance. I don't know if it had the ECS (Elegance Coral Syndrome), but it sure fit the bill. It also had what the original owner of it described as an "LPS-eating flatworm" which looked like a type of red planaria...but didn't fit any of the species I knew. It's still not thriving, but it's definitely healed from when I got it months ago. I used the three-step dip protocol (mentioned previously) on it, and I think that did the trick.

barbazoid - there's nothing saying you can't learn! There's no inherent skill for this. It's just practice and learning from others! Glad to have you along with us.

Here are some photos of the Elegance I saved when I first got it...

Anyone have a potential species name for these flatworms?

MechEng, I will have to try that 3 step dip!! I have lost so many trachs, and they are my favorite coral so i keep trying. I just lost an ultra rainbow one because it just started receding like they always do. Finally something to try and save them! Thanks

Ok...I'm trying to not jinx myself...but wow. I got one last night that was absolutely disgusting and almost no tissue remained. The guy swore it was a goner, and I was so sure it was, I didn't bother to take a photo before. I did the three-step dip and superglued a line across the healthy tissue. Today, it's puffed up, the decay has stopped, and it looks great. Seriously...try it. I wish my microscope was better so I could get an idea of what's going on. All I know is that it seems to really work. Just make sure you have one full mouth remaining with no decay.

Update on the Brain , Sorry for the bad news , But

I have lost the battle to save this brain. It was stable for about a week and then took off with receeding of the tissue again , till it was gone. I thought the glue had stopped it .
What a shame ..it was such a nice piece .

I picked up 4 pieces from my friends' LFS yesterday. The place next door burned to the ground, and they suffered quite a bit of damage at the store. He asked me to take the survivors home and try to nurse them. Pics when the lights come on.

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for trying to save it.

Ok, I've got my fingers crossed. I'm trying your three step dip. I went to work today and found this guy. Last week it was truly amazing. We were selling it for over $100. I got it for $15. It has receded into the inner disc, but still has one mouth. Here is the insecticide I got, I hope it works. What else do you suggest?
