Rescue Corals

Remember these two from months ago? They were given to me as mostly skeletons from the LFS.
And for that, we thank you.
:)

Jstn - ohhh, very nice! That scoly should be an easy save!

Johnike - beautiful as always! Is the one on the right an Acanthophyllia (hard to tell from the pic)? Any words of advice? Trachys are Acanthos are some trickier ones to rescue.

Any tips/tricks to get it to feed? I tried tonight with the pumps off and by spot feeding mysis but after 15 mins it showed no response (due to stress?).

I have off and on...nothing too crazy. I've tried just about every "new awesome" thing for reefkeeping over the past 4 years, and some of it helps with certain things...some of it is just a joke. Unless I know there's an issue, I just do regular water changes and dose mag/alk/ca. Vitamin C dosing does seem to help corals that are getting pretty bad, but usually by the time I notice a problem, it's a bit late to start dosing (especially since Vitamin C needs to be ramped up). I also use amino acids...it helps getting rescue corals to open up and feed.

Update to the riddler pectinia rescue corals. The 4/5 frags that had eyes have pulled through nicely!! I gave one to a friend, and am going to keep the largest. The last 2 will be sold. My first solid rescue so I'm stoked!! Logged in to the wrong computer account, so i'll post a pic later.

Fantastic! Wish you were closer - I'd definitely love a piece!

Here are the after pics. If we were closer Mech I would gladly give you a piece. I did not realize that this coral is fairly rare until I tried to find it on the internet for sale or at other stores. Im pretty sure the piece I got was maricultured and does not come around often. I will make sure the other two frags being sold go to good homes for a reasonable deal. (Considering I traded Kenya trees for the original piece in very poor condition - a $25 value trade). I feel like its my job to help spread this coral to save it from being harvested more frequently I hope. This coral prefers very very low light, but needs some light. It is hard to find a place for it in my tank due to my powerful LEDs and shallow tank depth. I am yet to see them produce feeding tentacles but I'm hopeful as they have just started to put off growth along the edges.

I get the other one!!
:wavehand:

Lol!! I'm glad people show interest in it. I love pectinias. Very beautiful, unique coral. I only sell corals on craigslist, but if someone is interested in a trade though RC, pm me! Back to rescue stories though....lol....no hijacking a great thread lol.

Oh yea! Mech.... my LFS that was killing corals left and right where I got that pectinia finally hired a part time "expert" that runs the coral tanks exclusively. The health of them has improved significantly and they are not losing many at all now. It was a combo of bad water tests, hidden pests, and an overall lack of husbandry. Thanks again for the help with my and other's rescues!

That's great!!! I'm sure the lower coral losses more than compensate for the cost of the part timer.

You are correct! Could easily cover him full time, which I'm sure will happen sooner than later. Still a step in the right direction though! Some of the bugs they found in their tanks were crazy! A two inch long fat n healthy nudibranch (bad kind), sea spiders, etc....

Heads up folks...

I recently took in a Pectinia that kept receding on its owner. I found some very tiny pods that lodged themselves into the flesh. They looked like a white version of red bugs (found on Acropora corals). A treatment with hydrogen peroxide, Bayer, and CoralRx did not eradicate them (eggs?) It seemed to get rid of the initial population, but they returned. Pics and more info to follow. Initial treatment recommended is 3 x Bayer dips a week apart and observation in QT.

Thanks, I lost a rescue Pectinia a month or so ago that was coming back strong for months, then croaked hard and fast.
Keep us posted.

Tweekedta- any update on the candy cane? Hopefully its coming around pretty good at this point!!

well i wish i had a better update but the candy cane is still on the upswing but very very slowly. i don't know if it had anything to do with my new led lights that took me a while to dial in or not, or water parameter issues but they all seem ok so I'm not to sure, I've even dipped it again. and tried spot feeding. lately i haven't been getting much growth out of my corals so i may have a bigger issue? i mean no corals are dying, but just kinda maintaining it seems. thanks again

LFS was shutting down so they sold me this Trachy for $10. It had some pretty bad bleached spots and most of the flesh was transparent. Feeding it mysis shrimp once every few weeks seems to have made the biggest improvements.

October 4, 2013: After one month. Bottom of the tank, not a happy camper still. Flesh is so transparent in some areas it doesn't look there is any flesh there.

December 23, 2013: Getting better but still suffers from transparent flesh in spots.

March 30, 2014: No more transparent flesh and has a nice red hue with pink stripes and some purple marbling around the edges.
