Rescue Corals

Glad to see this thread is still going strong!
I just picked up a new rescue. I believe it's a yellow cup/pagoda coral. At my LFS it didn't have any PE and it's tissue was starting to recede. Now I have a general sense of what to do as far as caring for it (ie. coral dip, low flow, low light, target feeding etc) but does anyone have any extra advice?

Now that I have awesome lights there is indeed orange! Also lots of green is starting to show up and it's actually made quite a huge improvement!

When bought:

I got a few new acans, one last night got stung by a torch tentacle breaking off and landing in the acan's mouth. Almost half the acan is dead (2 polyp head), i tried to remove the dead material, any tips, this was/is a really nice acan too.

As always, nice jobs everyone!!!

SeaBass - that hole in the coral should just heal up over time unless you have a critter (like a gall crab) keeping it open.

BxS_Reefer - thanks! As far as your coral goes, I think the standards still apply. My first thought was was target feed...and keep your nutrients down so algae doesn't grow on the dead parts.

ItzJustin - I wouldn't worry about trimming the skeleton for such a small frag. It should quickly regrow. If it continues to melt, dip it for 20 seconds in a 10:1 water:hydrogen peroxide dip. Then dip it in 0.5ml Bayer Advanced Insecticide to 2 cups tank water for about 15 minutes.

CoralReeForrest - nice job!

Jstn - pics!! We need before (and after) pics!!

I only just noticed it today, but that cup coral has a little critter (perhaps a gall crab) living down in a whole in the center of it. Is this bad?
Also a pink birdsnest colony that I just got has a little pink crab on it. Any ideas what they are?

Mecheng,
Now I've never done you bayer or peroxide dips, as fear of doing something wrong and killing the coral over helping it has prevented me. However I would like to give them a shot since I have a bit more of an idea of what I'm doing and feel more confident.

What are the products you use and the ratios and times in which you use them? Also, do you do them along with the standard iodine dips? I know a lot of people use lugols, but how do you feel about CoralRx or ReVive?

Ah, yes, I see him now! There's a lot of debate on gall crabs (if that is what it is...), but I don't think they're harmful. The female usually leaves a hole in a coral, but that's about it. She usually doesn't leave the hole (the males travel). If it isn't a gall crab, then I'd be worried.

Look up Trapezia crabs - they're symbiotic with birdsnests (among other corals). Does it have black claws? Have a photo of it?

I use the following in this order:

10:1 tank water to hydrogen peroxide for 20 seconds (standard pharmacy hydrogen peroxide)

0.5ml Bayer to 2 cups tank water for 10 minutes (15 min as a standalone dip)

1 ml CoralRx to 1 cup tank water for 10 minutes (15 min as a standalone dip)

I used to use Lugol's iodine, but the corals usually browned out...and the pests remained. I'll still use it if a coral is badly damaged (like a fresh sting), but that's about it.

So far, this critter isn't leaving at all.

I think that might be what the other is. It's completely pink with very tiny dark spots on it's legs. It never completely exposes itself so not able to get a photo. Doesn't seem like it's doing any harm though.

On the peroxide dip, is that 10cups tank water to 1 cup/ml/? Peroxide?

It's a ratio. Do whatever is easy and will cover the coral. So, you could do something like the following:

100ml tank water plus 10 ml hydrogen peroxide
300ml tank water plus 30 ml hydrogen peroxide
10 cups tank water plus 1 cup hydrogen peroxide

Oh ok. Awesome. Thanks a bunch!

I wish I had gotten a pic when I got them but there was a 2head teal candycane coral at petco that had been laying on the sand for a month, mgr wanted to sell it to me for 20, went back and worked with the aquatics manager and he gave them to me for $3, they have since inflated back to their normal size and are starting to color back up.

Also got a neon green mushroom from the same guy for free that was sitting in one of their fish only tanks, went from half the szie of a dime to the size of a quarter in 2 weeks.

Great job on your corals, always great to see someone who is willing the take the time and patience(and risk) of saving a damaged or sick coral.

Rescue Corals

@MechEng99 , sure you can help, I was given 4 acan frags around 3 weeks ago, have had them on the substrate and now high up on frag racks, they are not doing well and I for sure don't want to have them die. Any suggestions on what has worked for you.

SeaBass - any idea what happened to them in the first place? How have they done in the last few days? Have they gotten worse since you got them? If so, what are your water parameters? Did you dip/QT them? Have you tried feeding them?

Thanks. I got them and they were fine. No QT when I got them. They not doing well. I moved them today from the main tank to coral only tank. Main tank alk 10dkh. Mg 1400 ppm. cal 420 ppm. No3 2ppm. Po4 0,64ppm. I gave them a strong iodine dip on Monday for 25 min, repeated this on Wednesday, will repeat on Saturday. I have been trying to feed a mix of rotifer, lobster eggs, reef energy A and B, coral snow.

The tank they are currently in has been running for around 5 weeks. The cycle should be ending in a week or so. If they start to do better in this tank then I am going to put it down to the lemonpeel.

In the end it could be my lemonpeel that is having a go at them.
