Hello all, it's been a little while. Two years ago things got really busy for me and I let my once mature reef go after some frustrations and disappointments. I left it running thinking there was a good chance I'd have it running again at some point. It looks like that day is here :D

The tank was originally set up in early 08 and ran as an all SPS reef for just over 5 years. It was my dream tank and everything I wanted in a reef. I stopped tending to it, sold off some of my corals about 2 years ago and just left the fish in it. I have a Powder Blue that I've had since 2011 and the other yellow tang, blue tang, chromis and pair of clowns I've had since roughly 2004 or 05 (prior tank).

Not using all of my equipment in awhile I was surprised to find that most everything was ok. My XP3000 skimmer and cleaner head worked great still but my impeller bit the dust because the magnet had split (apparently a known defect with the first gen bubble blasters). My 4 Vortechs we're running great with the exception of one controller so I had to replace that and while I was at it added a fifth Voretch (I like running them all on the lowest speed setting so it's good to have more :D)

Anyway, I got all my salt, carbon, impeller, Vortech, replacement tubes for doser and RO filters in this past week and got them all put on. I'm changing my aqua scaping this time to a more vertical approach leaving more bare bottom area for some LPS and encrusting montis (NEVER AGAIN ON MY ROCKS!!! lol). The open scape will also help with detritus. I got tired of having to turkey baster my rocks. With the 5 Vortechs positioned low in the tank I should have good detritus removal.

I'm picking up a spare Reeflo Snapper return soon, mine has been running for 7 years so it's making me nervous.

One thing I want to do differently this time is be selective about what corals I put in. After a few years of my tank being mature I didn't have any space for new additions because at times I just picked up or traded for random corals.

For lighting I'm going to keep my ATI powermodule. I had thought about going MH again but it doesn't make sense for me right now. I have 3 reefbrite strips but only plan on using 2 of them for now.

My water changing station in the garage is cleaned out and I did my first water change this past weekend. Skimmer got plugged in yesterday and is going nuts. The plan from here is to let it settle, maybe pull the rock out and check for anymore of those tube worms that shoot slime nets, clear any bubble algae and let the tank sit for a few weeks to get it settled and ready for SPS frags.

Anyone with cool and unique SPS please keep me in mind.

Cham, welcome back brother. Your tank was amazing before and I can't wait to see it up and running again.

LOL, sorry again Chad & ED. I think I've even done that in person a few times. As many years as I've known you guys and seen you at meets I still switch that up, it's a mental block :/

Not much to update, I pulled all my rock and scrubbed for the slimy tube worms that like to cast slime nets and redid my rock work to be more verticle, which took some cutting of rock with a cut off saw.

Replaced the tubing in my dosers, vaccumed out detritus a couple of times. My simmer is up and running but I dropped my collection cup on my XP3000 skimmer so I had to order a new collection cup today :(

Other than that not much going on. I tried to stop by Salty Supply to get refills of my Red Sea test kits, calibration fluid and some other stuff but couldn't catch anyone in the office today to answer my call.

All that work makes me tired. Place your order on Salty Supply's website. When you show up to pick it up, Chris will have it all ready for you.

Yea, especially in this heat
It says to call to make sure it's in stock before you order

No real updates other than I'm doing 40g water changes every other day (thank god for a water changing station). Had a ton of things needing cleaning/repairing.

Yesterday I tested my P04 with my Hanna meter and it was flashing 200 (off the scale). I thought I could get my P04 down with just water changes, Microbacter7 and bio pellets but it looks like this will need some more help than that. So yesterday I put my BRS dual reactor online with a couple of cups of GFO and carbon. I tested this moring and got P04 reading of 41 (about 12ppm). But those reagents are a couple of years old so I'm not sure if I trust them.

I'll try and get new testing reagents for both KH, Ca, Mg and P04 this week. But it looks like some progress is being made. I'll try to snap some pics soon

Very nice, and welcome back! Love to see your tank now :)

Thanks, I remember you from a few years ago :)

My SLR camera is dead and it looks like I'm spending all my cash on restarting this tank so pics are going to be hard to come by, iPhone 6 photos will be the best I can do for awhile.

One of the things that bothered me before was paranoia. When I travel for work or I'm away from the house for awhile I get paranoid about what's going on with the tank. I'm setting up a live feed wireless camera with color daytime and black and white night vision that I can see from my phone. Most likely just in the living room to be able to see the tank, but I may set up something in the garage for the sump area too.

I used to have to ask favors of family that really didn't know anything about the hobby anytime I was away. If there was an issue they'd be clueless how to help. With the cameras I don't have to ask anyone to check on the tank, if there is an issue I can watch and walk them through what to do or tell them what switches to flick to get things back to normal temporarily.

Getting closer :dance::dance:

My P04 has gone from off the scale of measurement on my Hanna ulr meter (.61+) to .03 in a week.

I've done close to 150g of water changes in total by doing water changes every other day and have been running about 3 1/2 cups of GFO and a full canister of lignite carbon in my BRS reactor. The days I'm not doing water changes I'm dosing four cap fulls of Microbacter7.

Now to just wait out and let things settle a bit. My Alk and Ca are sky high from the elevated alk in the salt and not having animals in the tank to consume them, so I'll have to figure out how to lower alk before introducing my first test acro.

Not really to sure how to do that, never had that issue before. Usually I would just turn my dosers off for a few days and the corals would suck up the excess

Any ideas?

The carnage a couple weeks ago, I should have put a coke can for reference. Those are 20" tiles and the one coral off the towel because I won't fit is about the size of two soft balls

At that rate, I don't think you have much to worry about. As long as you aren't running biopellets, and ULNS at the same time you won't have to worry about burnt tips on the acros. I would suggest you toss in a tester piece. I think you will be surprised to see it does just fine. The good news is that you don't need to worry about dosing for a short while. :)
