return pump help please :(

should be ok, you could probably go a little bigger and still be ok assuming your overflow is big enough. There are some charts-probably just google search them- that will tell you how much a given size overflow can handle. A mag 5 is 500gallons per hour- thats brand new and without any head pressure. If you are pumping the water up a couple of feet this will be reduced. Someone else out there with more experience could probably help more.

alot has to do with your pumping heighth as well.
im of the opinion your skimmer can only skim so much so if you pumping 8000 gallons a hour and your skimmer only skims 300-400 gph then your just pumping dirty water back in
and its usually quieter with less through your overflow.

o run a eheim 1260 on my 150 with 6ft of height so i pump around 600 gph on a 150
my overflow can only handle i think 900 but im not putting it to the limits either.. i like a little room for error

a slow pump means more skimmage patential.
a faster pump more current flow but less skimmage.
i just went with slow pump and just add powerheads since your gonna add them anyways.
thats just me.

Agreed. My sump is only going to have about 300 gph turnover after headloss. I figure that will give it plenty of time to get skimmed or go through my reactor
