return pump questions

hey hey all I am thinking of keeping my 120 dual overflow. I was wondering if I do what size return pump would I need for a sump right under the tank. If you need more info let me know.

What kind of overflows? Is it typical 1" Dursos?

Will you be running anything else directly off the pump (skimmer, reactors, etc.) or just returning water to the display?

Do you want a submersible pump or external?

1" overflows, nothing fed directly and submersible pump is what i was thinking.

I'd look for something in the 1000 gph range, assuming you'll drop a few hundred gph due to head loss. The mag-drive 9.5 or 12 would probably be popular choices but I'm not personally a fan. The Quiet One 4000 is similar in performance to a 9.5 in this sort of application but is cheaper and uses half the power. That would probably be my personal choice.

if SPS reef you'll want at least a Mag12 or equivalent

I was using an Iwaki RLT40 under my 120 with two 1" overflows. Gary is powering his skimmer with it now. Go find out
