Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Re: Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

Hey Aaron. It's great to hear from you. The tank has been growing.. Unfortunately, I've been battling with some cyano issues over the last few weeks. This stuff is a real pain in the arse! But, as with eveything else, it's part of the hobby. Right now, as I've switched the bacteria from MB7 back to what I used to cycle my tank (Microbe-Lift Special Blend). It seems to be slowly doing the trick. I'm probably going to back off the vodka dosing an switch to another carbon source like vinegar. From what I've read, it seems that cyano doesn't like vinegar. I will try to get some updated shots for you. I can't wait for you to get everything set up! LOL

Here are some updated shots at 8 months. Please forgive the quality of these pictures. I love my iPhone, but the pictures can't do the tank justice...

I hate Cyanobacteria!!! :uzi: I just thought I would throw that out there...

Looking Awesome. Some good colour and growth there. I went overseas for a month for christmas/newyear so the tank budget has gone. I picked up a tunze ts24 kit overseas. i'll have the 2 tunze and 1 mp40 and see how I go. Because i'm going with an external overflow i had to change the dimensions of the tank. i also have to get a eurobrace which is ok cuz it hopefully will stop the fish jumping. tank will now be 60x32x20. the tank is build just need to do the overflow. getting my house restumped in the next couple weeks then i'll start on the stand. hopefully have the tank up and running in 1-2 months.

wish you lived closer so we could swap some frags. ahah

cheers

Aaron

Thanks Aaron! I know you have to be excited to get your new tank started. As for being closer, that would be awesome. With the GBR in our backyard, we would have the sickest tanks ever!! Well, at least one of us can.... I can live vicariously through you

Re: Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

I was actually having delusions of gradeur thinking about replacing my skimmer. The thought was that more air injecting into a skimmer was going to move me closer to solving all water quality issues outside of good husbandry. Thanks to the great advice of some honest friends, I have come back to reality. What does it matter how much air is being injected when my collection cup looks just as nasty as some of the so called super skimmers in the same amount of time. Here are some pics of my old faithful Dletec 851 showing it brawn after 4 days. Any defending positions on the more air is better concept are welcome. I need to understand this concept better..

Nice tank, I've just switched over to T5 over my 40g to give it a try, WOW not bad . With your skimmer producing that nasty nog only means it is doing it thang. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Where in Queens are you located? I'm in Queens and dont know anybody that is heavy into reefing so I can sharpen my skills at the same time seeing other tanks in person other than on RC.
