Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

The new Skimmer (BK Supermarin 250) has been running for about three weeks now. All I can say is WOW!!!!! I had a hard time coming to the decision of purchasing this skimmer and after the first few days of break-in I was skeptical but patient.. My PH has increased and this thing is pulling out way more skimmate then my beloved Deltec AP851, which in my opinion is no easy task.. This BK is a true beast Here are some shots with just shy of 5 days worth of NOG!

The next day....This BK is sick and the smell is worse!

Jonathan - Just caught your post on the Rimless thead that you had yours built by Eddie too !!! When your first pic came up on the screen I'm thinking, gee that looks like my tank but that's not my rock work ..... and it looks bigger. How are you liking his tank build? Looks like everything is doing well for you. I'm really happy with the tank he built for me. Question for you. How high off the water are you keeping your ATI? I just picked up the Sunpower and so have been fooling around with different heights and such.

Glad you made it to the thread Merfin! I absolutely love the tank.. I get a lot of compliments when people see it in person. My iPhone pictures don't do it justice at all. One of the best additions I got for this tank was a GEO aqua-silencers from Premium Aquatics.. Originally, I built a durso, but I could not get the height right. The aqua-silenscer adjusts to give you the perfect height and the results are a dead silent overflow box.

Jut recently, I raised my fixture up because, I noticed my corals getting very light at the top of the tank, while those at the bottom were getting more intense. You can't underestimate the power of these ATI fixtures... So, I recently raised mine up to about 8.5 to 9 inches with very good results so far. I have Clams on the sandbed and they tell me right away if they're not getting enough light. So far so good! Will you be starting a build thread?

Think I'll go for 8" off the water surface as I have a Sunpower vs. the PM and my fixture is far narrower than my tank. Certainly the 5" I had it set at originally seems a bad idea to start. I've been debating starting a tank thread. I like them for personal tracking but my ability to keep things updated ebbs and flows depending on my work schedule.

Shockingly my Durso is doing pretty well. My only issue is that the endcap is higher than the tank edge so I will likely have to cut a hole in my mesh top so it sits flush to the tank. Like you, I'm running a mesh top (at least when company is not over) to prevent any jumping.

Dude... The amount of skimmate this thing produces is insane  Actually, I've seen an upshift in PH and I have also noticed some good growth taking off on a couple of colonies since a week after adding it.. The water seems clearer and my fish are breathing a lot easier thanks to the added air it's injecting... This was a good purchase IMHO.

Whats funny, is that I inject ozone. With my last skimmer, adding ozone made the skimmate get lighter as the ozone broke down the organics in the water.. With this skimmer, the first 1/2 inch of skimmate is a soupy color and then it turns black and remains that way unitl I have to clean it at the end of each week. This happens consistently every time I have cleaned the cup.. I owe it to MSHUR big-time for his recommendation on this skimmer

bro,
You getting some nice skimmate:) I am glad you like this skimmer, definately was a good purchase. Now you need to get SCH..:)

I think 8 inches is good start and will give you nice coverage. I certainly know about ebbs and flow, but it's so much fun to be able to look back at it over the various stages..... good and bad..

The Aqua-silencer comes just below the top of the teeth on the overflow, so it works out really nice.. Best 28 bucks I've ever spent. As for the screen top, I just couldn't take it anymore.. Too many fish jumped out.. Now I have peace of mind.. Like you, when company is over, I pull it off.

Thanks a million Bro! As for the SCH, I knew that was coming.. I better get out my cup and start singing on the corner to raise the cash

Did you add one yet? if so which one and do you need a sewer drain to be close by?

bro, i got mine with skimmer together:)
works great, i have it on the profilux timer and cleans colection cup twice a day:)))

Nice, I'm gonna' have to come check out your setup soon.. Let me know when you're available.. I would like to see how you have it all set up.

Jonathan - Didn't see in a quick scan of your thread whether your running a GFO reactor or not. I'm debating buying one for my tank and looking around to see what others are doing.

Hey George,

I do, but not continuously... I find that it's unnecessary and potentially harmful when carbon dosing because our tanks need some PO4 to support the corals. I typically will run it for a few days after I siphon my sandbed to help deal with a potential PO4 spike then take it off line. If you're not carbon dosing, I think running GFO is a solid way to go.

Thanks. What version of carbon dosing are you using currently? I was a Vodka doser on my previous tank though I have been watching Randy's Vinegar dosing thread recently.

No problem :). I started with vodka and I ended up running into a really bad Cyano outbreak all while dosing MB7 daily. During the outbreak, I switched to a 1 part vodka 3 part vinegar mix and switched my bacterial source to Microbe Lift's Special Blend. Cyano is gone and the tank has been doing great since switching.
