Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

1+

Nice , So you did get the Acillies,

Your tank keeps getting better and better with time, Keep up the good work .

Thanks Bro. Yeah, I couldn't resist. So far so good & eating well.. Some white spots, but not too bad and not affecting the other fish that I can see.

How's your tank coming along? I have to get through there..

Wow.. I guess it may be a decent option for you then. it's the nightmare stories about kalk doing that scare the &^% out of me. Thankfully, I have all you guys to learn from.

Unfortunately, dripping kalk, or topping off with kalk is going the way of the dodo bird in this hobby. Which is a shame really because when set up correctly the benefits completely outweigh the risks.

We could talk about buffing parameters, elevating pH from neutral, the added benefits of phosphate "control", etc, etc, etc. And then someone comes in with "Kalk Nuked My Tank", and everyone goes running for the doors. It's been this way since kalkwasser went main stream ten years ago. Even some well received hobbyists on these forums are afraid to add this feature to their systems.

If you drip it at night to control pH, or use it to top off the tank, along with a controller (or litermeter), and a little maintenance, you'll be happy.....kalk is one of those "x factors" in this hobby, that just appears to work.

I think if you are running a ca reactor which can lower your pH then maybe kalk is worth it but with so many of us now running two part I believe kalk has lost it's popularity.

Tanks was ready last week but the hole in the overflow were on the wrong side. will be fixed this week. Started building the stand but my parents in law are coming to stay next week so will have to finish it off in 2 weeks. I have all the equipment so should be up and running within a month.

Thanks V1 :) I ended up going with the 7d. Finding the T2i in the States was virtually impossible. I opted for the kit with a 28 to 135 zoom with an additional fixed Canon 2.8 100mm macro lens..

The Achilles is about 4 inches from mouth to tail. He is currently 3rd in the food chain behind my Yellow and Hippo tangs. Provinding he continues to do well, he will run the tank one day.. He eats Sea veggie Nori Sheets rolled up with prime reef flakes soaked in garlic and selcon. He also eats PE mysis and spectrum pellets (also soaked).. He is a PIG! and I am so grateful for it after hearing the horror stories of those that don't eat and/or have poor appetites. Flow is very important for these fish. He loves to ride the current. I feed him as much as I can, which has actually helped to deepen the colors in my tank..

Thanks for that info. Good to hear your one eats well. I saw three 5-6" Achilles yesterday at the fish street!! They are certainly amazing looking fish. Keep the photos up bro!

Jonathon,
Wow, really looks awesome.I think i may need to drive down and come see you .... one weekend. lol

Hey man, you're more than Welcome anytime. Thanks for all the encouragement!

Laddy, Thank you very much for your input and you are right in that people will run to the hills if a few negative opinions come through. However, some of these guys that have responded, I know personally and I have an incredible amount of respect for their opinions due to them being in the hobby for quite a while and having such beautiful tanks. I know first hand that there are amazing success stories on both sides of the debate. Tanks that I have seen that drip Kalk are usualy devoid of algae and growth is awesome! (check out Reefbums recent 3 year anniversary post).

If this were my last tank, I would not be so apprehensive about dripping Kalk because I was not carbon dosing. Now I am and that reason alone makes me think twice before acting due to Alk sensitivityof this current system. However, I like the idea of dripping only at night, but then I will have to deal with ALK fluctuations between the two and I know stability is key in our systems... :fun5: Hey, some times we have to just try slowly and see how things work out.

Another excellent point D! You have much more control over levels using a 2 part system. For me that would negate the reason to use anything else for raising PH. This is a great supporting point for the Balling method.... especially for folks that have PH concerns like me.

Man, You're right at he gate with it! I can't wait until you get started. For those who have never seen Snaza's 120, take a look. His current tank is one of my favorites and I know this new setup is going to take things to the next level.

You're welcome! Yeah, he eats really well. I would have preferred to get one in that size range. Many folks say that, they are more stable at the size you saw them at the fish street (Love that you guys have a "fish street" by the way in Japan).. However, none were available to me and the price was already ridiculous so I can only imagine how much a 5-6" would have been. I paid what I did only because they were eating so well in the store.. As for the photos, I really can't help myself. I'm already thinking about taking the 100mm back and upgrading to the new "L" series fixed 100 so that I can take better free-hand macros. I'm hooked Buddy. LOL!! I'll keep em' coming!

Just great. My aptasia problem is gone for now .I revamped the tank.Starve the Copper Butterfly and he started to eat them and I also used some joes juice and I'm good .

You probably already know this but just incase....

Sodium carbonate will slightly raise your pH and sodium bicarbonate will have little effect on pH. Most 2 part users are using sodium carbonate. If you find that your pH is a little low make sure you are using sodium carbonate.

That's fantastic man! We have to link up.

Yep. However, my problem still remains. Both will raise my Alk, which is currently dialed in just where I want it. I think my best bet is to leave things alone and just accept the slower growth.

Terry, I can't help myself :lmao: I don't know whose more tired of me right now...
My family or the coral  Just wait till I get a tripod hee-hee!!!

New Pics and update on the Achilles.. So far so good.. He was looking his absolute best today and I figured I would take some shots.. He's starting to fatten up and getting that really healthy shape to him.. He still has a very light dusting, but he seems to be winning the battle day by Day! What a fish! I hope you enjoy the pics...
