Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

I see your problem... You may want to message RC "MELEV" he's really good at sump design and may be able to give you some ideas to deal with your issue.

Thanks, you for your kinds sentiments. It's not easy... It's a day by day process for me. As for the Vortechs..... that coin jar in the closet went a long way for me  Not only do they move a lot of water, but the spread of the flow is what amazes me... I'm not too crazy about the humming sound that they make, but I am sure I will get use to it... I just set them up last night. I'm experimenting with how to place them. Right now, I have both of them on the same side(left). the undertow is great... I may try to move one to the back right hand side. I don't want to see the wires on the viewable side if I don't have to... One thing that I am experimenting with is placing at least one high enough so that if the power goes out and the battery back up kicks in, that the water level will be close enough, where the Vortech will create a whirlpool over it and suck air into the water. With out introducing air, I think the Battery Backup would be useless..... I have read that simple surface agitation may not be enough to add ample oxygen to your tank.

Thanks Bro..
I just added sand and the Vortechs last night... I am planning to get the Aquascape done tonight and then I will post some new pictures

Thanks Rick!

Here are some pics of the aqua-scaping as of last night... I can't wait to get my lighting fixture so that I don't have to use my flash, which shows every smudge... Personally, I feel that I am void of any artistic qualities (LOL), so aqua-scaping is always a struggle for me. Here's what I've come up with so far..

I used about 120 pound of cooked rock.. My Rock came from my best friend Monte(RC member BBMCRAE) who took down his tank a few months ago... Between Monte with the Rock and my Buddy Alex who helped me with the plumbing, I saved a huge amount of dollars. Thanks Guys!!!! You are the BEST!

I also mounted both my vortechs, which are both currently on the left hand side. It's difficult to see them with the black background and without a lamp over the tank... Not sure yet if I'm going to keep both on one side... I already started thinking about supplementing them when the time comes with my Tunze 6010 and 6100 from my previous tank on a multi-controller if need be... It's always nice to have a backup plan or in some cases overkill in this hobby  However, once the tank gets crowded, it may benefit from the additional flow.. we'll see how the Vortechs do first alone...

Next up is ordering some Brightwell products to help with the cycle..

Looking great buddy!!!.. I would be a lil concern about water level in the tank, seems a bit high..

Thanks Mike. I can definitely back off my return pump to make it drop. Is there a rule of thumb with the water level on rimless tanks?

Jonathan - Awesome tank, best of luck. If its the same one I'm thinking of, I saw this tank during its construction at Eddies and was very impressed and jealous. He did a 65g starphire rimless shallow for me that I picked up a month or so ago. I can't go any bigger than the 65g at the moment but was sure admiring the 180g he was building. I'll just have to live vicariously through your build.

Wd40,

Thanks Dude... I wasn't sure if there was any specific recommedation, I'll dial back a tad just to be on the safe side

Hey fellow New Yorker :) Good eye.... It's probably the same tank.. It took him about 6 weeks to finish it. It was just delivered two Saturdays ago.. Eddie and his Dad built it together I believe. This hobby is to share so, please join in as things progress.. Would love to see a shot of your tank and your input along the way..

Awesome thread, I have left the hobby before and I felt the same way. I am actually in the middle of moving right now and I will be attempting to move most of my corals with me. Wish me luck. I am subscribed!

WOW, you came back in a BIG way!

The 36" width is great because it will give you so many aquascaping options. I cant wait to see it all lit up with the new ATI fixture.

Have you decided on what bulb combo you will be using?

great looking tank jbanks. i have one suggestions though.... it would look a lot better in my house! i really envy the 3' depth, that will give you so much room to create some dramtic aquascaping effects. keep the pics coming and congrats on a great start.

Wow! Another excellent build! I wish I had room for a 36" wide tank. :(

Awesome progress so far, I am sure you will really enjoy that Power Module, it was the fixture of choice for me too, if my DIY unit didn't meet expectations.

Hey Sunny, welcome aboard. Like I said, I will have lots of questions  The space I have to have to work with is pretty flexible... My problem is the lack of creativity when it comes to the placement.. Right now there is a lot of surface area for placement, which is what I wanted without having to much rock laying flat on the substrate.. It's pretty cavernous right now, which is good for flow.. However, I'm sure I'll be changing things around as I go.

On the Bulbs, I have patiently waiting are:

4 ATI Aqua Blues
4 ATI Aqua Blue Specials
1 Power Chrome Midday
1 Power Chrome Pure Antinic

I can't wait either  (hopefully, it will be here by this coming Wednesday)

Thanks Poseidon! The funny thing, is that I really went back and forth on what size I wanted. Fortunately, the perfect corner in my basement den worked out...

Jonathan,

Looks great... Welcome back!!

Can you post few more photos of the stand? I am in the process of making a new stand for my 36"x36"x27" cube tank too, I need some ideas ;).

Jeremy

Thank you on two fronts.. First on the compliment and 2nd on helping me to indulge in some really cool accessories for the tank... I love doing business with you guys at Premium Aquatics... Always great advice and always fantastic service... The best in my oppinion.. Kudos to you, Josh and the rest of the staff there!!!

Hey Cali
Hey Cali, Thanks! Those dimensions for your new tank sound cool! I'll take a few shots tonight... It's an oak stand stained in Jacobean. It was built 27 inches hign .. I have that sitting on at 10" Iron platform that one of my neighbors fabricated for me, which sits it at 37".. Give me a few hours and I will get them up.
