Rimless Aquarium Club

What is the "Glass Safety Factor" for a rimless glass tank? I know it's somewhere on this thread because search engine points to it; but can't find the actual post that has it. Thank you!

petco/walmart etc 55s are typically made out of thinner glass (to make them lighter for shipping purposes). you will have to make a glass eurobrace for it & it would need to be at least 1/4" glass & minimum of 2" wide on all 4 edges....which will greatly cut down on the top opening since it is only 12x48

also keep in mind that the majority of these tanks are also tempered on all sides because of the thinner glass, so you can't drill them. so if you can't drill it, you have to use a siphon-overflow box & you can't do that if you eurobrace it

When I did the transfer from my 90 gallon, I had about a total of 130lbs of live rock. I planned the minimal aquascape, so I placed about 50 in the DT and the rest in the sump until I was able to sell it off. It took about 2 weeks, and I did not see any ill effects in removing the rock. Now, I have about a total of 70-80 lbs in the whole system, with maybe 50 of that in the tank, tops.

Ive got a question if anyone knows that would be great!

Iam looking to purchase a rimless..iam going for a cube shape and it must be starfire glass...either 3 sides or all around most likely..

Does anyone know what are the size limits with these things? As Iam looking to go pretty big or as big as I can..and whats the tallest it can be?..I was thinking around 500 gallons in all?

going rimless on a tank of 500g is gonna be EXPENSIVE cause it is gonna require some seriously thick glass!!!! there are a few 300+g tank build threads floating around in the DIY forum & those are made out of 3/4" braced plywood w/ 3/4" front glass panels....take away that top bracing (especially if you go over 18" tall) & you have some serious forces being put on not only the glass but the seams as well. the only way to overcome it is w/ very thick glass.....my uneducated guess would be (depending on dimensions) that you'd be looking at 1-1.5" thick glass at minimum

what is the recommended distance between the T5 and the water?

the closer the better to get good par at the sandbed....which also depends on the tank height

i'd say 12-16" tall tank, 6-8" off the water would work fine....18-24" tall tank, i'd say 4-6".....24-30" tall tank, you're wanna get it 2-4" off the water, but at that point you're gonna wanna be sure you have some sort of splash shield to protect the bulbs

30" or deeper tank, you'd be better off going metal halide

Probably a silly question...but has anyone approached Glass Cages and offered to pay extra for a clean silicone job? From what I've read, that seems to be the biggest complaint. Or do you think that would just **** them off?

Plan B for me is the new 57g Oceanic Illuminata tanks, but I would prefer something a little smaller.

i think since they started offering rimless tanks, their overall silicone work has gotten ALOT better....but yeah asking that might set the old guy off as he can be a bit tempramental LOL

another EXCELLENT source is Ocea Aquariums. they are in Boaz,AL & do alot higher-end work, but on a glasscages comprable budget. give Ty a chance to impress you...he has several of the member of my local club
