Rimless Aquarium Club

reefsahoy, what's your stand made of? It looks like black glass
it's oceanic tech stand. yes it 3 sides glass.

I set up my Oceanic Illuminata last Thursday. The tank and seams were flawless. Today I noticed the upper right hand corner looked like this and I am somewhat concerned since it is rimless. What do you guys think? I started a thread on this in the Lighting and Filtration Forum to get some opinions.

It's probably ok. All tanks have some type of air bubble in the glue work and besides there is almost no pressure on the top of the tank. I personally wouldn't worry about that.

Any more pictures of the Illuminata? I hope oceanic comes out with a larger version soon. I was really considering picking up one from work... but The 57 is just a tad too tall for me though. I like a rimless tank to be 20" or less.

I have asked this question in other forums but maybe the wrong ones. I am going to make/buy a rimless tank in the next couple of weeks. I need 44x24/24 (the height is not critical). I have heard that 1/2 inch glass is sufficient. Glass Cages says 3/4 is what they use. I would like to know what the people who have a similar size think and also how much does something like this weigh (empty). I may have a local glass shop that does high end zero frame corner windows cut the glass assemble and deliver it. Maybe I could assemble it myself. What do you think?

Here's some new pics of my setup. Had a great friend come over and take a few pics.

The stand is steel and skinned with concrete on top and each side.

The front door is a custom kitchen cabinet door by Thomasville.

I still have some stuff to add on but wanted to share a few pics.

John, I think anything over 40", 3/4" is recommended for rimless. Mostly if it is 24" tall. 1/2" will work, but would be pushing it to the limit of what would be considered "safe".

If you feel comfortable doing it yourself, I say go for it. There are a few threads of DIY tanks on here that could help you. But with a tank that size, I would feel more comfortable with a professional job. Have you checked out OCEA for a tank. He is located in Alabama and is pretty close in price to GC. There are a few people in our club that have some new rimless tanks from him and they look Awesome.

What kind of a aquarium/tank is that? Custom built? Etc...

I actually have two Glass Cages tanks sitting about 3ft from each other, one is a 40g rimless with standard glass and one is a 100g rimless with Starfire glass. Even though the 100g glass is thicker it actually is clearer. I really think the addition of Starfire becomes more of a must as the glass gets thicker.

I could not agree more! 3/4" plate glass is even more green just like starphire gets clearer. If I had a 3/4" tank it would only be starphire.

Thanks, I contacted OCEA for a quote. I am also leery of a DIY tank of that size and weight. I also need to really think out the overflow options and whether or not I should do a continuous loop or go with a Vortech. I am thinking of doing the Bean overflow, coast to coast on one side. I have a nice, but unusual spot for this tank. It will be viewable on two sides and the ends are partially obstructed because the tank sits tight between 7" posts right in the middle of the 24" sides. If anyone has any comments I could sure use the help.

overflow options are unlimited, and I suggest going with Glass-holes.com for overflow needs. They have their standard boxes boxes but also custom build what you want.

This is the best thread ive ever read. Went through every single post...

Have a quick question tho. How many have actually purchased from glasscages.com and what are thier thoughts. They are way cheaper than others but is that for a reason?

Im building 3'x3'x2' rimless and they are priced great with only 100$ to ship to me so Im ready to hit the submit order button.

Please help with any good or bad advise from this company. The 90 day limited waranty has me scared. They must not be very confident in thier tanks which makes me sketchy to put one in my house.

Thanks guys and gals...

There are lots of conflicting threads on here about GC. I have owned 3 tanks from them and my current cube is from them. I have never had an issue and most of our club members own GC tanks also and are happy with them. They will not be show quality tanks, ie polished edges, ect... But they are great tanks for the price.

I picked mine up about a month ago and I have no complaints. The silicone could have been better, the egdes polished more, the tops a little more even. But I honestly have no complaints and tbh once its filled with water wont even notice those little things.
I drilled mine out and will have it all set up here shortly and will post some more pics. Im a reefer on a budget and asked, read, and researched their tanks and other than them not seeming to care much for customer service I think the tanks are solid.

I appears their quality varies by the tank. I am very finicky and it would be my luck to get a bad one. There is really no excuse for someone who makes these thing every day to have issues with bad silicon, uneven sides, and unfinished edges. I could build one like that.

Theres really not a ton of places I can find online to view rimless tanks and options... Other than elos or AGE and obsessed... Does anybody have a good direction to point me in???

Im also on a budget and Id rather wait on going rimless than get a half azz built tank that will cause me more problems or I wont be happy with....

With that said should I maybe just steer clear of glass cages?
