Rimless Aquarium Club

I see no reason to stear clear of them. Look closer at who says they are bad tanks. Alot of people who say dont buy from them have never even owned one. But many if not the majority will tell you that owned them that they are just fine.

Like Hooser said, once it has water init you can hardly tell. The tanks are built solid. and for the price they are great.

JTL, you are correct on the quality varying by tank. Most I have seen are pretty decent, again it is not a AGE or a Miracles tank (that is why it is cheaper). I have been to their shop and can say they produce a LOT of tanks. this is why there is so much variance. It is a production line and alot of custom production. They do build standard size tanks as well and also thousands of terrariums (that is where the name glass cages comes from). But I agree you could DIY one cleaner and polish your own egdes.

OCEA tanks are somewhat cleaner, but I have seen some shotty work from them also. For a perfect tank I thing you have to go with one of the quality custom builders, but it will cost $$$

I know that make a lot of tanks and probably the majority of them are just perfect. However I do fail to understand the quality differences. It sounds like it is just a matter of inspection before they go out. Jeez if the glass isn't even take it apart and fix it. As far as trying to justify the cost by inferior quality doesn't get it for me. Their glass is the same as everyone else. It is a quality control problem. On guy on a thread bought an acrylic tank from them to use at frag shows. It was terrible. Uneven seams, bubbles, thinner material then he ordered and get this......a finger print embedded in the bottom. After going around and around with them they finally agreed to refund his money, but not the shipping. Hey, anytime you order something like this sight unseen it is a crap shoot. I bought a Remora HOB skimmer a while back and the glue job on that was pretty bad, but at least I don't have to look at it every day.

will glasscages build a custom sized rimless? looking for say a
60x30x18. most of their only go up to 48 in length with the exception of the 2 that are very shallow 72in. HOSSER where in bradenton are you located? ive just been so skeptical to order from them with the stories about peoples tanks popping. i can live with bad silicone work.

I can tell you there probably is no quality control there , but again that is the risk that we all know with them, which factors into the price. I personally know about 35 people with GC tanks and they are all fine and would vouch for GC. I know of 1 failure and it was actually at a LFS tha had a GC tank, but it was a tank that had a cracked bottom (user error) and the bottom pane was replaced. On the note of acrylic, NO WAY would I get acrylic products from them. Their acrylic work is terrible!

Barfish I live in north west Bradenton. Their acrylic work is very very bad. Saying they have uneven edges is a little harsh as I should have said the edges are not perfect but they are in no way bad enough to complain about. The larger the rimless you go the larger the risks. Barfish if you would like to come look at my tank shoot me a pm. Kevin at KDs has ordered several 400+ gallon tanks and had nothing bad to say so as someone I trust I went with them after much mulling it over. Im glad I saved the money now and went with them.

kevin's a good friend of mine actually. kevin gets all his acrylic tanks from scott at suncoast in tampa now. i will prob. take you up on your offer Hosser. im deff. wanting to order a tank or maybe even attemp a diy.

The thing that impressed me most was the reinforced bottom. The panels are siliconed then another bonding strip of glass siliconed on both edges to tie everything together. Shoot me a pm sometime I wont have water in it for another week or so you can throughly look it over. Also for anyone intrested I have pics of it but have them posted somewhere else. let me know and I will shoot you a link. I has been drilled with a glass holes over flow kit and 2 3/4" returns. Looks super clean

barfish, HOSSER, here is my rimless i got custom made here in S. Fla. The finish is awesome and was built buy an aquarium builder here in miami. I thought about going to glass cages but heard too many complaints about them and made me shy away from them. I have no experience with them but i must say if i were to build another tank i would go with this builder again. the finish is awesome. polished, beveled edges. silicone done perfectly, and eurobraced at the bottom of the tank. You can't see the eurobrace at the bottom because the sand covers it up. never mind the red cup, i'm trying to get a riccordea to grow on some substrate so i can glue it to a rock.

i can say that would be the case. the guy that owns it stays in the office 99% of the time (different building) & answers calls. the "shop foreman" is a mexican guy that when i was there seemed to be the only one that spoke english, so you can tell they use cheap laborers

they don't go thru the trouble of taping all the edges to get perfect silicone lines or polish the edges perfectly....they are paid to turn the tanks out quick, so doing that sometimes you get some sub-par work

you want guaranteed high end work, then you are gonna have to pay for it....

nice tank reefs ahoy, James3370 I completley agree and wouldnt ever tell someonje to go with GC over another higher end brand. But if you are on a budget nothing has scared me from them yet. Again I want to stress this as someone did to me as well. All the comlaints arent from actual owners, or ones who have ever owned them.
Funnily enough as I type nothing is wrong with them I would highly urge everyone ordering from them to nix the overflows they install and do one yourself. The overflows are wretched.

i think the biggest complaints are from people who wanted "custom" work done....for one of their stock tanks w/ no drilling or overflows they are the way to go if you aren't looking for museum quality silicone work

but yeah, i'm amazed at how some people the mere mention of the name glasscages & they spen hate like the girl possesed by the devil in the shining LOL

i remember one thread on another forum somebody asked about prices for cut glass & i linked the cut sheets of glass page on glasscages site & this other guy ranted on & on about how bad glasscages tanks were..... (1) he later stated he had never owned one & (2) the thread wasn't even about the tanks, it was about cut glass price (which GC has some of the best prices)

....but i mentioned GC & it was almost an involuntary reflex for that blowhard to start spewing GC hate LOL

I heard the custom work was the way to go actually haha, I guess you cant always trust what ya hear. They even told me personally they spend alot more time on the custom work or stuff with starphire than they do a general run of the mill tank. She also said that they consider all rimless tanks custom work, so go figure on that one haha.

Good link Sunny, the company as a whole isnt worth defending. If somoene got a good tank, great for those that didnt it sucks.

The funny thing is, when I compared the price of the Miracles tank and that of what GC had there was only about $100 difference! Miracles tanks are light years ahead of GC. Its almost like comparing a caveman to modern man!

I just checked checked GC's site and they want $927 BEFORE shipping for the same rimless I got from Miracles.

Crazy!

No this is a guy whom a lfs owner recommended. He says he's been building tanks for 10 years. i went to his house and saw his work on other tanks, light fixtures, and sumps and was totally impressed wiht his work. i ordered the tank right then and there. here's a pic looking down on the rim. the finish is really good and the silicone work is perfect.
