Rimless Tanks and Nerites

Here's a little observation I made today. The back of my tank is rimless, and today I went to clean behind there...I found a dozen nerites back there who walked right out of my tank onto the carpet to wait for high tide. Oddly enough I was able to revive one by soaking it in SW. The rest, not so much.
I don't know why I didn't figure this out sooner, but rimless tanks and nerites don't mix.

It's a sad sight:

Yes I found this out the hard way also. Lots of dead ones behind the tank :(
I tossed the shells back in the tank and my hermit crabs are using them now.

I also had 10 or so snails that are now shells and i had a place in my tank for them to get out of the water. They used it but still crawled out so i haven't bought any more. The place i had was a flat piece of live rock i let dry out. I thought it was my water quality they didn't like. Sorry but i feelbetter not being the only one that has had them die on me.

My crazy cerith's do the same thing only I have a rim to stop them:D If I see them there for more than a day expecting the daly lama of high tides to come then I put them back.

I had a few Nerites that made it over a rim and onto the carpet. Sometimes you get to them soon enough, sometimes you don't. You could try to provide them a piece of rock that sticks out of the water, but I'm sure they'd still do it on the glass despite your efforts LOL.

so if putting a glass top on top of the tank is bad, how do you keep the nerites in the tank? is there a better snail to use for algae?

For some reason my nassarius, when I feed the tank, love to climb up to the top. I had one make it over the rim one day. Once I stopped laughing at it, I pushed it back in. Sorry you weren't there to catch these guys. When we moved to our new place earlier this year and I broke down my tank, I found the body of my poor diamond goby - he must have found the only crevice on the tank not covered by grating, and jumped. :(

I have a rimmed tank with nerites that do the same thing. I have made it part of my daily routine to check the floor for these guys. I've had about 20 climb out and I throw them back in everytime and have only lost about 5. Sometimes it takes a while to revive one.

Yeah, I won't buy them anymore, they just find a way out. Found one half way across the room once, trucking off to who knows where.

Mine are able to last an incredibly long time out of the water, but they do like to climb out of the tank a lot. As long as I catch them the same day they seem to do fine when I put them back in the tank.
