Rio HF

does anyone have experience with the rio hyper flow pumps? My LFS (the good one that I trust) said that they dont break like the other rios. the owner showed me the differance between the hyper flow and the original and the hyperflow seems much more reliable. the LFS has swiched almost all of there return pumps to these rios. Are these pumps more reliable than the old rios?

I had one for about a year it was working fine then it cooked . I can`t get parts except through rio ,it sit`s in a corner now collecting dust until I send away for parts.

I wouldn't recommend a Rio for a return pump. They are not reliable. I have have used a 2500 and a HF as return pumps, both failed to restart after power outages. The problem I have found with many Rio pumps is the impeller hole is worn by the ceramic shaft to the point the impeller binds and won't spin without a knudge. This takes about a year of constant running to occur. The head pressure of being a return pump (5-6 feet of lift) is too much stress for this design. I use a Rio 2100 on my skimmer, the impeller last about two years before it needs replaced. The only difference between a regular Rio and a HF is the impeller blade. It's worth the money to buy a high end pump.

Everything said above and they run really hot. I've gone thru 2 in a year and a half. Using as a return pump (only pumping from under the tank, about 3-4 ft) they get really hot and lock up when you turn off for any reason and it is a pain to get restarted. I am in the redesign mode right now looking for something to replace HF.

Had a HF 17 for over a year. Never had a problem with restarting and didn't run very hot either. However after six months, it started to hum a little. I soaked in vingar and thoroughly cleaned. I noticed that the shaft has a piece on the bottom that screws onto the shaft. In their advertisements, they mention ceramic bearings for the shaft, but this is not a bearing of any sort that I have seen. This piece had began to rust. Finally it was making too much noise for me to take and I replaced it with a Mag 12. The HF 17 is now my water change pump. I would buy a more expensive brand and avoid TAAM products altogether in the future. Still trying to get them to send me just a new shaft not whole impellar assembly.
