Just purchased a beautiful ritteri nem a week ago, I checked on him a while ago, and he is now two! Both sides look healthy and still colored up. Never expected this. Guess I got a two for one deal.

Although I have not had it happen in my tank, the stress of moving often causes mags to split (or so I'm told).

It's definitely cool when mags split. I had one that began to split, but never finished up on its own so I ended up cutting it. By the time I cut it, both sides had mouths and were eating independently.

Some mags split down the middle from the mouth, where each side has half a mouth which close up after the split. Others, like the one I have literally split in two where a second mouth forms from the original, then the nem splits into two separate nems.

I felt like I had a two for one deal too!

When mine split, it tore itself through its mouth. this meant that neither halves had a mouth. Fortunately, within a few weeks the mouths had formed. I posted about it in this forum. I will have a look and see if I can find the thread.

That's called budding. :D

Here's a photo of mine while it was in QT:

I know it's not a great photo, since it basically shows two nems that are next to each other. But in my case, the nems were still connected together.
