RKE problem with Temp probe

I've got a RKE system installed on my tank and I've got an alarm set up for low temp. Every now and then, the RKE will start beeping the alarm. I'll check and sure thing it says low temp. All I have to do is press the function key to silence it, then wiggle the temp probe wire. The temp will then resume back to normal. Today this happened while I was at work.

So I have a couple problems.

1. The bad signal or what not that trips the alarm. The temp probe is new and the wires have not been kinked.

2. When it goes into low temp, the heater will turn on. It actually thinks the temp is 74* or whatever the reading is. Today this happened and thankfully the temp of the tank was only 80* when I got home. Its normally 78*.

I've tried unplugging the temp probe and I've checked the connections and it all seems good and tight. Im worried this is going to happen while Im away for extended period of time and cook my tank. Thoughts on how to cure this.

If "wiggling" the wire makes it jump back to correct reading it's a bad wire/connection.

But why are you using a alarm to control the heater???

Use the temp controller on the reef keeper to control a heater. Why do you want an alarm going off every time the heater turns on? Set a alarm to go off should the tank temp fall a couple degrees below your heaters set point but do not use it to control the heater.

If your heater has it's own temp control set that to 1 or 2 degrees below the reef keeper "ON" temp so it acts as a backup should the controller try to overheat the tank.

Could be the wiring or it could be you didn’t calibrate the temp probe, even if you did calibrate the temp probe I would ask what you used to verify the actual temp of the tank? I calibrate my temp probe about once every month or two, due to the fact the temp probe strays from the actual temp (only about .5 degrees but still)

I was thinking a bad wire also, but being it was pretty new, I was unsure. I'll pull the whole temp probe out and take a look closer at the wiring.

Im not using the alarm to control the heater. The alarm sounds, because the controller thinks the water is to cold and getting a reading of less than 76*. Since that is below my program setting of 79.9* It turns the heater on trying to reach 78*. When in all actuality the tank is 78*.

Its been abut 6mo. since I've calibrated the probe, which I compare to 2 different digital thermometers I use for work. Although that isnt the issue here, the controller has randomly alarmed at least 6 times in 2 months, and a simple wiggle of the wire corrects the problem. Its very odd though that just wiggling the wire fixes the issue, but I cant duplicate the issue by wiggling the wires to make it alarm.... Things that make you go Hmmmmm

Huh, I thought both the RKE and the RKL could use iTemp. I thought it just depended on weather they were using SL1 or SL2

I have a itemp on my RKL with a SL2v2
