RO/DI Filter CLOG!

Hi,

I don't know what's going on, but the carbon filters i got from BRS keep accumulating a slime coat that clogs up the filter. The filter would need changing every month or 2. Is this common or is it due to inferior carbon cartridge?

I have never had problems with premature clogging on the BRS carbon or prefilters even when used for very long periods of time with continuous use. Perhaps its something in your tap water that is causing the slime build up? Make sure to clean the canisters when changing out the filters to reduce bacterial growth.

I would backflush the membrane . if you don't have the bypass valve I would get one. It'll prolong the filter life and doesnt cost much.

Bypass the carbon and the micron filter and go straight to the membrane?

Or do you mean connect the water inlet to the membrane so that the water filter goes backward making the Ro/Di inlet into the outlet and the outlet into an inlet?

How is your pre-filter doing? I had a similar problem recently where both my carbon blocks clogged up and my pressure after the pre-filters dropped drastically.

Removing the pre-filter, I realized the big issue was that despite the prefilter looking cleanish on the outside, the core was completely plugged up with junk, and it was continuing to get through to the carbon blocks.

I'm planning on adding another pre-filter canister in the near future.

What micron rating is your sediment cartridge and what is the micron rating on the carbon block. If you have a 1 micron sediment but your carbon is the 20,000 gallon chlorine guzzler it is rated at 0.5 micron so In this setup the prefilter is letting stuff pass fouling the carbon block. I run a .35 mic pleated sediment and a .5 20k chlorine guzzler carbon block. Make sure your sediment filter is also seating properly.

I installed the Ro/Di incorrectly. I placed the Carbon Filter before the Sediment filter. Could that be what caused the clogging?

Agreed. The sediment filter removes things that will clog a carbon filter. The carbon filter is to remove clorine which damages the membrane.

I have 5 micron paper prefilters. Totally makes sense though. I'll have to get another canister for after the 5 micron prefilters and put a much fiber one in there. I think the carbon blocks are 0.5.

I currently have 70psi after all prefilters. I should be okay with Abother prefilter. I want to keep the 5 micron prefilter as we get lots of heavy particulate in the water here. It's lightly filtered lake water do subject to a fair amount of sediment.
