RO/DI supplies

I just replaced all my filters and I am still not getting any water output. The waste side slowed down, but the 'good' side is not doing anything. I had it on for the last 24 hours thinking it might just take a while, but still nothing this morning. Any ideas?

So I know somebody who has an RODI unit forsale but the problem is it has not been hooked up for awhile, I was wondering how the membrane would be and where I could possibly get a replacement, not to mention if the other cartridges will need to be replaced as well....thanks

Don't waste your money on a used system. The carts, membrane, and resin will cost just as much as a brand new unit.

As for 600+ TDS Make sure you run your water for a while before testing starting TDS. I had around 758 with water straight from start up, but once I got the water out of the lines that had been sitting, I got 260-280. TDS seems to creep up in water sitting in home water lines.

My specs in Davenport are 260-280 into membrane 13-16 out with 0 out of a single DI. If you are getting high TDS out of the membrane try increasing waste water ratio as too little waste flow will push higher TDS through the membrane. The other thing that you should make sure of is that you have a Filmtec membrane, I have had nothing but great luck with Filmtec 75 gpd membranes.

Slow waste usually means plugged membrane. How old is it and do you know what ratio good to waste you were running? How much and often do you make water? If the membrane is over 2 years old or heavily used I would put my money on it that it is clogged. I just had to replace mine in the last 6 months as it just slowed to almost 25 gpd from 75 gpd.

I assume the membrane is about the 4th filter in the system, the one that splits waste from good water. I replaced all the filters but that one. Can i pull it out and clean it manually? Or what about getting a replacement? I need something, I havnt done a water change in a while...

all the filters were over two years old. now they are all new except for the one still causing me problems.

I use to make about 20g a week and would get around ~3/1 waste to good. The waste goes to the dog's bowl, then into the basement sump to be pumped outside. so i dont have a real good measurement. but 3/1 sounds close.

....does anyone clean the particulate filter elements between replacements. If so how? Do you empty the water out of the canisters between using, or just let it sit? Has anyone else had such bad luck w/ the inline horizontally mounted cartriges, and do the full sized vertically mounted variety last longer?

...thanks for the help!!

We are pretty much in the same boat here as far as bad water goes. My set up came with the same horizontal DI's too. I went through them just like you are. I switched over to a vertical DI and have had no problems since. Plus they are refillable. I have noticed a difference in the DI resin though. I blow through the stuff from Air Water Ice. I need to figure out who I bought the stuff from before I bought this resin from them. It was MUCH better!

...Bob let me know what you find out on the DI resin. Do you clean your filter cartridges, or empty them between uses?

Thanks

Mark

When I change them...about yearly I just rinse them out and wipe them down. They do get nasty looking but there really is nothing you can do. Just keep an eye on your TDS coming out of the membrane and what is coming out of your DI. Those #'s will tell you when you need to take action on anything. My water going in is about 670...RO is 28 and DI is 0.

I change particulate and carbon filters every 4-5 months, but I use 30 gallons per week on average. There is no real way to "clean" any filter. The membrane can be flushed if you have the flush kit added to your system.

3/1 is alright. I definatly think the membrane is fried. It cannot be cleaned, it needs to be replaced. I suggest a Filmtec 75 gpd.

BOB,

Try buckeye field supply they seem to have a quality DI resin.

I would second Buckeye Field Supply, I have used their DI refills with good results. I just got some refills from The Filter Guys, so I'll have to see how they do.

I got the RO/DI unit from www.thefilterguys.biz on monday real nice good value. Tap water in ~80TDS, RO out 6 TDS, DI out 0. Good price, good build quailty, all clear canister, push-in fittings. I added my TDS meter, and plumbed a shut off valve in and the system was up and running in 5 minutes.

I made water for a overdue water change and a week worth of top-off and I burnt through half of the DI Resin in the little in-line DI.

As far as Resin life span the stuff I got from spectra-pure lasted 3x longer than the stuff I got from Purely.

Thanks for bringing up www.thefilterguys.biz it was a good buy.

It is almost just as cost effective to buy a new unit everytime you need to replace your filters. I have over $100 in new filters in the last two weeks, for another $30 I could be rocking a brand new 75gpd 5 stage unit.

The membranes are the heart of the system's cost and I agree that when it comes time to switch them it is almost cheaper to replace the whole thing. I just remembered this morning that I got my filmtec membrane on eBay for a good price. Hope that helps someone.

What are the chances that the membrane is still good, even if the unit hasn't been hooked up in awhile, there is still water inside the membrane cartridge...
