Rob's ten ton tank

Our 300 now seems so....tiny.
What an incredible love of the hobby you must have. Can you share a bit more about the "back room"? :D

Thanks for the nice words, folks. I've been trawling RC for several years, even though I haven't posted much. Tanks like chingai's and the TOTM have been a huge source of inspiration, guidance and envy.

Here's the tank with the Becketts off and in full late autumn sun:

In winter, the angle of the sun means the front of the tank is a little dark. I've measured PAR at the back of the tank at 400mE/m-2 at 6ft depth. Here's what the sun looks like in afternoon sun in summer:

I'm thinking that a diffuser of some sort could spread the light around the tank better. I don't want to compromise on the glitter lines, so I'm not sure how to do this. I don't want to use shade net, particularly in winter, 'cause it'll cut PAR too much (around 70% for the best stuff I can get here). I was thinking about cutting holes in the diffuser to get the glitter lines, but also get some diffusion. Not sure if this will work as intended.

There's not much to show on the machine room side. It's mostly a shared water body at the moment. 15 x 660L tubs and the tank empty into a shared 1000L in-ground sump. 5 others are currently separate. I run around 600mg/H ozone into a (hopelessly undersized) borrowed Deltec skimmer:

I raise and lower screens over the tubs using a homebrewed winch system:

I have a nice 1000L per day RO/DI system:

Um, what else is interesting? :) Here's the pneumatic caulking gun I used for the tank:

Here are a couple of nice shots of the insulated part of the greenhouse during construction:

This is fun. My tub covers being raised:

Looking back at the old photos, it all looks so clean and orderly (well, relatively).

Here's a very old shot of the glazing going in on the greenhouse. Shows the structure nicely:

Here was a recent nice moment of zen. Watching the moon set through the tank early one morning:

Absolutely stunning, while I absolutely would love to build a house around a tank (if I built a house) not sure I'd have the stones to do it... especially considering what I'd have to trade to get that on the wife side of the equation :D...

Not to mention how fast is your electricity meter spinning? Granted climate is different there than here, but still gotta be making the southern tip of Africa go dim to power all of that :)

suscribed...just finished reading your original thread! You've come a long way...nice job!

Now the fun really begins!

loved re-reading this, between you and Sean I'm sold on the concrete tank as a basis, just need to move into my new house before I can start planning new tank :P

Cape Town is known the place of huge tanks. One guy tries to outdo the other, the biggest 80 000L and plus built into the home. Rob your tank still rocks and your massive greenhouse too.
